I have to fill in a Self Assessment but am employed and paid through PAYE.

When I filled in my SA a few months back I was cheerfully informed that I owed HMRC some dosh which I assumed would be taken by adjusting my tax code.

This evening I’ve received a letter inviting me to pay a balancing payment by the end of Jan.

I thought BP’s were for self employed earners and that my tax should be paid as I earn through my salary.

Have I missed something? Plan to phone HMRC tomorrow and ask for the tax to be taken on PAYE but thought Imd ask the wise here first.

What did you tick? And when/how did you file?

Page TR6 of form SA100. "If you owe less than £3,000 for the 2018/19 tax year and you send us your paper tax return by 31 October (or 30 December if you file online) we'll try to collect the tax you owe … by adjusting your 2020/21 tax code. If you don't want us to do this, put 'x' in the box."

Also on page TR6,

"If you owe tax on savings etc etc… we'll try to collect it through your wages.... If you don't want us to do this, put 'x' in the box."

That's a good idea actually.

I phoned the up, the nice man told me that I had filled the form in correctly, but HMRC hadn't processed correctly and should have adjusted the amount as to come out of my salary. Now updated.

Thanks everyone.

Just had a similar issue.

I am PAYE, and have been completing SAE for a decade +.

I get to the page where my tax calculation shows and:

1. the tax due is very close to the tax deducted by my employer
2. HMRC asking for an amount circa 50% of 2018/19 tax value due as payment on account by end Jan 2020.

Both amounts in 1 and 2 showing as due for payment.
