As the title really.

I'm specifically looking at a P30 Pro as an alternative to an S10. I know current phones still support google apps and should do for some time but do we think they'll be obsolete within the 24 months you typically own a phone?

any advice from owners, people in the know appreciated.

I wouldn't. I had a P20 lite which didn't run Android Auto so had to get rid, and now given the issue with potential lack of support from Google there are plenty of other options with less risk.

I had a Nokia 6.1 which was very good but I changed to a Samsung A70 about 10 days ago as there was £100 trade in offer. The Samsung is brilliant, and for the money I am very satisfied.

I've probably missed a big Huawei-hoohah but why would Google stop supporting their phones?

The US is having a tantrum over 5G. Huawei are getting banned.

Not arguing, but my P20 lite runs Android Auto, although it updated from the original version of Android (7?) at least once before I got a car with AA, so that might have affected it.

Not sure I'd buy another Huawei now though, despite the fact that the P20 lite, and the P9 lite I had before, have been great.

I'm posting this from a Psmart, it replaced a Samsung s8.

I hated the Samsung with a passion, bixby was intrusive and I could not get rid of it, nor could I get rid of face book or any of the other bloatware on it.
Battery on the s8 was dead in a working day.

Psmart, simpler, less bloat, easier to delete what you don't want and the battery uses 20% from 7am until 11pm each day.

Good WiFi, good Bluetooth and hooks up automatically to any of my cars.

I'm glad I ditched the Samsung. Hateful thing.

I liked my S7 a lot, and the camera of my new S10 but full screen is annoying, it's too big, none standard screen ratio, hidden menus.

However I thought it was more known than the Huawai and didn't want any agro.

I have the P20 Pro and its a great phone. I was also under the impression that anything up to the P30 Pro/Mate is and still will be supported by Googles security updates. Its just the new future stuff that currently looks like it wont be supported. Huawei have already delayed the release of their new tablet due to the US ban.

I have a p10 plus, would buy a p30 pro. I've also just bought a Huawei tablet. Once the Donald is impeached I don't think there will be too many issues moving forward. Also Google have said that they will continue to support existing Huawei phones that have play store already on it.

As above, my p10 plus supports android auto.

Yes, just bought a P Smart 2019. Lovely phone. Replaced my aged Motorola G5. Everything current will be supported and the "Don" has already accepted that the ban is hurting US companies more than China. I am pretty sure it will get sorted.

P30 Pro is fine comes with the play store.
If your moving phone to phone Android just transfers your apps across anyway.

Yes, and I just have. I got a P30 pro to replace a S8 which it walks all over.

Currently running October's security update (expecting November's shortly and then Android 10) and I expect that will continue for at least the next couple of years.

It's only the Mate 30 that's not got Google apps.

Yes and have done. The P30 Pro is an amazing bit of kit.

Camera alone is worth the risk.

Personally, no - but I won't buy any Android handset that doesn't allow bootloader unlocking (so I can flash custom roms/lineage OS should the need arise in future) It used to be able to be done on Huaweis previously, at a cost of $30-60, but I believe this was being facilitated by Huawei engineers on the side and they got caught and it stopped!

However my Mrs has a P20 Pro and it's been flawless, really superb bit of kit, zero issues, and no 'can you fix this' from her - superb battery life too. P30 models will be fine for support, it's the Mate 30 models that don't have official play store support currently, haven't really looked in to it on the Mate 30 TBH, but you can generally sideload whatever you need from the likes of APKmirror etc by allowing 'install from unknown sources' in the settings.

Have done so recently. I purchased an Honor View 20 (Honor is a subsidiary of Huawei) . I wanted a phone with a TOF sensor and at £275 it was really good value. Doubt it would have been that if there were no sanctions.

Good to hear people are getting on with it. It's the battery I'm most interested in, and seems the international market S10 had some serious battery drain issues which would drive me mad. The cameras are a bonus.

My wife and I both have P20 Pros and they have been brilliant in what they do, but not 100% sold on the quality of them. In mine, the charging socket came loose and just yesterday, the fingerprint sensor of my wife's phone stopped working and became hot to touch. Huawei's customer service seems spot on though, mine went back via O2, who were completely useless, she contacted Huawei direct and had a return arranged in 15 minutes.

Battery life is really good, I use mine for games and browsing a fair bit during the day, but usually has 50% ish charge left at bed time. Fast charge is also really good, I use a Belkin charger (misplaced the genuine one) and it's even quicker than the genuine one. Had a OnePlus 3T before the Huawei and with that, you needed to use the genuine charger and genuine cable (I do use a genuine cable, but not necessary).

That's the reason I won't buy a S or Note series Samsung in the UK - Samsung has an agreement with Qualcom to use their Snapdragon chipset in the US market, rest of the world get Samsung's Exynos chips. Here's a speed test between the SD855 and Exynos 9825 Note 10+-not even close!

I tend to buy the last gen flagship, 3-6 months after the latest gen has released, very nearly bought an S9+ before finding out about the above and bought a Pixel 2xl instead.
