Lookintg at potentially sacking VM off, so shopping around.

Currently have 70mb from VM and its always rock solid, albeit with some throttling at times I suspect.

Online chat with BT who, for my area, could onyl offer 16mb.

Sounds like a huge difference, but is this the same as Megapixels for cameras ? All just number bingo to get you to part the cash ?

Only 2 of us in the household, use Netflix and Motgp so possibly quite heavy users at times.

What would you say is a decent speed and who would you recommend ?

Aside from the whole "do you actually get what you pay for" issue, only you can decide how low you can go, as real world never matches calculations, as you can't account for latency.
The fact is you are already on one of the better connections, in that you get the 70Mb that you pay for and probably low latency too.
I get that some people have issues in some areas with VM, but if you dont, I wouldnt move as you already have the best and the grass isnt always greener....

Yeah, thats kinda what Im seeing.

Issue is they are/have become as arrogant and rude as Sky (used to be?) and I hate giving them the dollar.

I also hate the incessant price increase mid comtract.

The BB from them tho, cannot fault it.

You need to start phoning them up when they do that to see if there's anything they can do with the price. I've never failed (touch wood) to retain a discount keeping it the same.

Is Virgin fibre, and BT is over the Openreach copper phone line?
If yes (like mine) keep the Virgin until the rebadged Openreach is in & working.
Do BT offer a way out if their BB is pants?
If not, find one that does
Then if it is no good - can it & keep Virgin like I did !
Easily worth £31 per month for solid 200mbps+ (openreach @ £20 was slow & flaky, cancelled it)

Depends how much you are paying for Virgin. You have already said its been rock solid but 70mb is on the low end of what they offer speed wise. If you are out of contract call them they may offer you 100/200Mb for a similar price.

Most companies lately seem a bit poor when it comes to customer service and most increase the price mid contract. If your current connection is good and stable I wouldn't leave Virgin as the speed alone makes it worth it.

This is the crux. We are currently paying £67/month for 70mb/Funtv/talkweekend

We dont ever use the phone, the Tivo box is really old and a bit flaky....

Phoned and said cancel it all off and the best I got offered was same products for £51

Asked how much for BB alone, and they dont offer 70 any more, only 50/100

Was told £45/100 or £34/50.......

Its just the attitude that does me in, Ive been a Virign customer since dial up FFS.....

We've gone 4g for data. We're getting 80mb/s down and 30mb/s up. Plus if you have an EE mobile you can gift up to 120Gb per month. See the 4g thread for more details. We've had it in for a month or so and it's been reliable, more reliable that the 4mb/s we got from BT.
Don't get a data plan, get a phone sim and a 4g router, see Ofcoms ruling in 2018 for more details.
