Escort XR3i values
Discussion
Just wondering if anyone knows the values of XR3Is, particularly a convertible model. Not really my thing as classics go, but I know someone who sold their XR3i convertible about 2 years ago. When I asked what he sold it for I was told £200 lol. I thought that was sad that he only got that for it as when he bought it as a non runner (mechanically I think it was ok just needed a bit of work which didn't cost much and a fresh not) he only paid 200 quid. The paintwork did need some attention (not sure if a respray was essential) as it looked faded. As far as I can recall, the car was great driving. I thought the colour was unusual; the nearest colour I've found is called Rosewood Red. Can't be many like that knocking about. Just a pity he had to sell it. I wouldn't get out of bed for 200 quid lol.

Funny how the market works. If these were RWD I think you'd be looking at £5k.
…..and the rest I'd say.Gartrac G3/G6s go for double that and up
Having said that, there is a rwd Mk3 with flared arches and Atlas on up for 3.5k at present ( not a Gartrac built shell)
No engine or box, seats or door cards - used to run a 3 litre V6
Tbh I'm not well up on Escorts, but I know it was a later xr3i model, like this:

Can't seem to find any pics with the colour it had, though this is similar, though from memory the bumpers on his were black:

I suppose not the most sought after or desirable Escort, but still I would've thought he'd have got more than 200 quid for it (I think it was sold into a car dealer).
Here's one I found for sale, though I think his was a 94/95 model.

I cannot understand why he let it got £200, yet the car above is listed as no current MOT and selling for that.

Ah, if you're talking about the 90s mk5/mk6 Escort then that would explain the £200 - they aren't desirable and no-one lusts after them (except the RS Cosworth), and values were probably even lower a couple of years ago.
The 80s mk3/mk4 are more desirable because they sold well, had a reasonable image at the time, and nostalgia has kicked in.

The 80's mk3/mk4's are more desirable because they weren't "watered down" in the same way that the 90's mk5/mk6's were. The 80s mk3/mk4 are more desirable because they sold well, had a reasonable image at the time, and nostalgia has kicked in.
By the 90's the XR/RS cars were soft, underpowered cars, and the badges they wore were pretty much just a trim level moniker.
The 80's cars on the other hand, were a bit rawer, and a bit punchier with their performance. They were sharper to drive, and in general, a much better looking car.
By the same token, the 80's cars also had a reputation for being thraped to death "back in the day", being stolen, being written off in accidents, becoming the plaything of "Barry Boys" - gaining ugly body-kits in the process, and (eventually), rusting like a 70's FIAT. Because of all of those things, they've become quite rare - especially good condition, unmolested examples, hence their higher values.
I agree the early Escorts did have an edge about them (both in style and performance) that the later series from the 90s didn't have. The XR3i MK4 and 5 had more of an "hairdressers" image about it to me, or something the Mrs used for nipping down to the gym in every week lol. Even so, £200 is just stupid, I would've expected maybe a grand at least. But I suppose that's the way things are.

The mk5 XR3i had a fair bit of effort put into it to be fair. I think one of the reviews stated (I think) "Ford must be part of the magic circle, as they have taken the base Escort and created a good car"
The mk5 had 2 power levels with 105bhp (for insurance) and 130bhp from its 1.8 zetec. The 130 also had rear disc brakes and the same uprated gearbox as the RS2000
I still have a mk4 Xr3i tintop(89) and I had a mk5 Xr3i tintop(92) - I did, and still do, prefer the MK4. Zetec Engine was better on the Mk5 and the PAS was great in town, but for everything else, the mk4 was a better performance package. In particular, handling and gear change wasn't as sharp on the mk5, the mk4 just felt more special helped by the distinctive exhaust note . I don't mind the CVH, i know it has it's haters but I keep on top of oil changes and providing the camshaft is in good order, it doesn't sound harsh. At idle, i have no ticking or tapping for instance. I find the CVH to be very gutsy low end and mid range, but is reluctant to rev like modern 16vs.
More importantly, it has character. Looks different to everything else but i don't daily it as I have a 60mile commute and against modern cars, it would fold very easily in a crash

Yes, the Mk5 RS2000 got pretty good reviews at the time - they managed to really improve on the basic car - RPJ had a hand in it.The mk5 had 2 power levels with 105bhp (for insurance) and 130bhp from its 1.8 zetec. The 130 also had rear disc brakes and the same uprated gearbox as the RS2000

Incidentally MH, have you tried a Mk3 XR3i against your Mk4?
Hi,
Yes, my Mother had a mk3 XR3i at the same time. I found the mk3 to be more raw with a bad ride, especially in the back. They softened the suspension up on the mk4 as the mk3 was criticised for being overly harsh, the mk3 steering was also better at speed as it had less turns lock to lock too.
My Mum had her XR3i (1982 GFJ501Y) from 1988 to very recent 2015 - so I have very fond memories of that car as I was only 5 when she first got it. She loved that car! I got my XR3i at the age of 18 (Mk4) and I got the mk5 as a track car to go round Castle Combe

I don't really know what condition (engine wise) the XR3i that the person I know owned was in when he sold it as I haven't spoke to him for awhile, but it was I know it was runner so deserved far more than the squalid 200 quid he got for it imo. I checked the reg recently and the last two MOTs had no advisories. I don't think he was bothered though, it was his pride and joy for sure as he would make sure the thing had its steering lock on everytime he parked it up even when on his drive as he seemed very wary about it being robbed by the local scallys (having no garage doesn't help I suppose).
There's no way one of my cousin's would let his RS Turbo go for that kind of money. Speaking of RS Turbo's, but why are most of them in white?. Everyone I've seen at a show have been that colour.
