Mid sized petrol/hybrid SUV 12k’ish

I’m browsing SUV options for one of our cars and would appreciate some advice. The car won’t do high mileage so I’ve ruled out diesels, but I’ve driven some older petrol SUVs and found the lack of torque doesn’t suit the car type.

I think that means looking for a more modern turbo petrol or a hybrid. Would love a rav4/NX but they haven’t dropped into budget.

I’d also like it to be well equipped. Ideally with Apple car play if available. Real 4wd is also strongly preferable but not a deal breaker. (In laws live somewhere frequently inaccessible due to snow over the winter).

Top of my list at the minute is probably a Titanium Kuga in our price range (12k’ish). But I’m relatively clueless. Any other obvious options I should add to my list? Please, no estates :-).

Thanks, I was hoping you’d reply as I’ve seen you give some very good advice on this forum.

I suspect that to increase my choices on something that specific I’ll need to consider a ferry trip to/from England, but I’ve friends & family that have done that and it worked out well. Time for some research and brave pills :-)

I think SUVs work best with an auto box. It makes them more relaxing to drive.

Thanks. I’d definitely prefer an auto but haven’t tried one in a Ford. I think they make sense in any non sporty car as long as the engine isn’t too underpowered. It does seem to be an option so I’ll see if there are many in our price range.

then your choice opens up since you can buy a normal car

Yes I'd say be prepared to fly over & drive back to open up your options, if you want an Auto then realistically you'll have to up your budget by 1k to get a well spec'd Kuga.

Yes, it ticks all the boxes and I definitely like Lexus (own one currently), but our budget would mean a leggy one. However, if I saw the right one I’d go for it.

Slight tangent but I considered going full electric for this car but after doing some research I’ve decided to pass on that. The used market isn’t there yet unless a leaf suits your needs. Next time around some of the new models coming out this year like the e-Niro and the Kona might fit the bill as the daily workhorse.
