I was thinking this would be useful for us phers who prefer older cars.
The general public likely won’t be interested in this kind of thing so I think we can keep it kind of a ph secret 😬

I’ll start with mine:
Mercedes 2002 cl500
Lexus 2005 Rx400h (very vaguely interesting)

My 2001 996.1 and recently sold 2005 Z4 3.0 are all ok to keep on about their business smile

Pretty much any Alfa V6 from 2001 onwards. 3.2 GT, GTA, 166, any CF3 2.5 powered car.

Brilliant.

Seems it’s not all bad news for lovers of older interesting cars for those of us who commute into the ulez.

X5 4.6iS

X5 4.8iS

X5M (real one not just a badge or idiot vendor not understanding M Sport trim is not a 4.4 twin turbo).

Don’t bank on the standards being consistent though, if it goes through as planned, despite producing 41g/km CO2 rather than 324g in the 4.8 X5, my 2019 Merc E300De (diesel plug in electric) will be banned from some Bristol streets in 2021 because it’s diesel.......

My daily driver, 2001 325CI is exempt. Which surprised me, somewhat. C55 AMG is also exempt, which is nice.

So was my E92 M3..

Always made me chuckle that our 2.2 diesel Honda CR-V was caught in the trap, but the 4litre V8 was exempt.

edit: ah wait, it was a 2007. So not pre-2006. My bad.

Here’s some fun inconsistencies: (just looking through my current cars)

2002-2008 BMW 760iL is exempt. 6l of v12, 330g/km CO2
2005-2010 BMW M6 is exempt. 5l of v10, 375 (or so) g/km CO2.
1989-1996ish 500 SL is not exempt. 5l of v8, 338 g/km CO2. Yet I have the German ‘green’ E4 city sticker - I guess the rules are different? (I don’t care enough to check).

Not the 3.4 - I'm guessing the 3.6 may be from earlier comments

This is the problem with central government delegating the implementation of the these schemes to local authorities.
A national standard is needed for both vehicle standards and zone charging

Bristol situation isn't about CO2, though. Most appropriate solution for out of town use may not be appropriate in town.

only the oldest / worst petrol cars have been restricted to the ULEZ zone (ignoring DB errors)

who knows what will happen with the next round of changes when they tighten things up again, it is inevitable that anything not running on electrons will be banned eventually

And then when cars are a hobby and not just a form of transport, the ban may be lifted again.
