BMW - what would be a good deal on a 2nd hand M140i?

Hello,
I am looking for advice on what sort of deal I should be looking to drive on a second hand BMW, in this case a 17 plate M140i for sale with Sytners on at £21k with 25k miles.

I would prefer to purchase the car outright but have heard that preferential deals are often offered if BMW finance is taken out. As long as I can pay it off early without penalty I would go for that option.

In your experience what is achievable on:

1. Discounting the asking price? What % is realistic if at all?

2. Getting more than 1 year BMW warranty thrown in?

3. Are service packs available on 2nd hand cars? If so, what would be a ‘good’ price?

Overall, in your opinion what would you be a good/realistic deal on this car?

Probably nothing much off the asking price

1 Year warranty useless as it has manufactures warranty for another year which is a better warranty. Get them to extend if you want, you can buy this option so compare price v value.

Yes service packs are available but normally not valuable if you don't plan to sell back to them, get a good indie to do the service as per BMW standard and its just as good.

Right bearing in mind I am trying to get a realistic idea of where to push for a good deal.

1. Car comes with a 3 year warranty in any case; so there will be about a year to run on that(?); in which case push for an extra year?

2. Not sure what is meant about service packs not being valuable unless I am planning to sell the car back to them.... I like the idea of not have to pay for the next service(s). Anyone else have a view on this?

What have you found works in striking a good deal?

For my 2018 Cooper DCT cooper S ex demonstrator bought at 13 months old got following from Mini dealer(not Syther)

Deal on extended warranty- suggest you try for extra year at end of manufacturers warranty
Next service included in deal which would be at 4 years old. Presume your car has just had service (check) so next for another 2 years but with warranty and service included should give 2 years motoring with base costs covered

Check tyres AUC cars used to be 4mm minimum but believe this is now 3mm if less than 4mm push to get replaced.
Not sure if latest idrive shows miles left on brake but if so check and if less than say 10k miles try to push for a deal to get them done on cheap -even if its in future when needed..

If the car right spec etc that you want I would book a test drive for week between Christmas and new year i.e just before year end. What worked for me was to ask for time to check car over on your own after test drive to check tyres, brakes etc Decided what I wanted to achieve to reach buy decision, Approached each one separately and got it agreed before moving onto next one.
Can't comment on finance deal mentioned above but such a deal may only been available on a nearly new car.
I was in fortunate position that mini had just been reduced by £1000 and was spec I want(about £8k extras) so didn't think I would have any success with negotiating on price.

Could try using cars posted above(especially one from BMW dealers) as a price negotiating aid but imo buying a secondhand AUC car should give you more confidence in getting things put right if anything is wrong with the car.

I bought a bmw at this time last year, its a good time to buy as they are selling few cars.

Assuming it’s a standard car, cheapest in the country are 20k. I’d make it clear you know this and convince them that you aren’t a time waster. I told them I would do a deal over the phone and would pay a refundable deposit to get the price where I wanted it to be. I was travelling 200 mile to buy it. In my case there was no incentive offered via finance and they (dick Lovett) would only sell service packs on new cars. I used a bank loan at 2.9% and added in cash. Bought a service pack at my local dealer (cooper) which is crappy value but I like paying a bit a month and then when the service comes round it’s all pre paid. Horses for courses

The bit I am struggling with is paying £20k plus on a quickly depreciating asset against £20k on an E46 M3 which will retain its value and maybe even increase in value.

I bought my 17 plate M140i in February from a main dealer.

I was quite picky on spec - Auto, adaptive suspension, heated seats, PDC, HK, pro nav, non-black interior.
Cost me £22k on 20k miles, so provided the one you're looking at is a good spec I'd say it's priced accordingly.

Mine needed the major service done at 28k miles, dealers wanted £700 for this so had it done at a specialist for half that. I'd push to get your major service included as part of the deal. Make sure all the tyres are matching and the standard Michelin Pilot SuperSports, if the dealer has thrown on mismatched tyres to get it through their approved used requirements then push them to replace them with a matching set - I had to do this with mine as they'd stuck a pair of Goodyears on the front.

I'm not sure I'd worry about haggling an extended warranty. Any time I've took the car in with an issue the dealers have just fobbed me off saying characteristic of the car, I had a Mini before this and they were the exact same. Mine wont see a dealer again when the warranty finishes up in March, my local BMW specialist are much better.

Honestly just buy one privately.

There are loads and loads out there.

You'll save a killing on the initial cost of purchase

And you can buy a BMW Insured Warranty for around £350

Which is still significantly cheaper than buying one with the exact same warranty from a dealer.

Good work with the research, which is all very thought provoking....... darn! I am tempted by E9X’s but §worry about the big end bearings. Also manuals are quite rare with them; which wold always be my preference.
