I have bought one today, purely to improve, mend, move on and make some wedge, but i was wondering, what is the bike's natural competition? Nothing really springs to mind. It's a 2015 bike so from the same era would it be the Triumph Street Triple 675? Or something like a Honda CBR1000? It's a tidy compact bike i will say that and goes pretty well, too.

The Street Triple is the most obvious competitor, similar power output, triple engine, similar size - 675 versions. The later 765 is slightly more powerful and has better suspension and brakes but still direct competition.

Nothing compares to the Mt-09. The competition is so poor I believe prices will go up massively for these bikes biggrin

okay so I have a 2018 model so maybe I'm biased. It is great except for small fuel tank.

The street triple is nowhere near as powerful though, peak power figures may be similar but the MT09 feels an awful lot quicker to ride than a 675.

Was going to say CB1000R or Z750/900, most group tests of the time pitched them against the 675's and 600's like the hornet, I don't think they had any other broadly comparable rivals at the time of launch.

Z800/Z900
GSXS750/GSXS1000/Katana
CB1000r
790 Duke
Aprilia Shiver 750/900
MV Agusta Brutale 800
Other MT09 based (XSR9,Tracer 9)

From my understanding, the MT09 has a good engine, poor suspension, build quality tends to be good but not as good as triumph, when new it costs approx £8k, after 5 years its worth approx 4-5k, as you can tell i;ve been looking at getting something in the same bracket!

MT-09 Tracers are very good things, we ran a couple as hire bikes. Put around 20K on both of them & they were reliable. Seats & screens not great though. 24K service is the big/expensive one. Build quality OK for the money. Like all Yamahas, they last OK if you keep them clean.

We now run a Tracer 900 which is definitely better (seat/screen are better, swingarm is a bit longer, bars a bit narrower & you can add an MT-10 quick shifter to it). As you say, the weak point is the suspension on either - that's where you would spend the money first. Use Givi luggage rather than Yamaha if you want that.

Tiger 800 is not quite there in the same "hooligan" bracket but a good machine none the less. New Tiger 900 might be more of a handful as might be the new BMW F900 XR, but lots more money obviously.

One out of left field for something of similar age to the MT-09 Tracer might be a Tiger sport 1050. Heavier, but a very good thing. Triumphs are much more expensive to service though.
