I am looking at buying an Apple watch. I have an iPhone 6s on GiffGaff - part of O2. Will it work?

Which model do you recommend? I would prefer not to spend more than the cost of a series 3 - around £200.

Yes, iPhone 6S still gets latest iOS so will be fine.

Series 3 is the first generation that felt quick enough for me - can do things like set up some music playing on the watch while you head off for a run without feeling like you're waiting on it to catch up. Not had any great incentive to upgrade to anything later than that, nice though the newer screens are.

Yes it will work fine, worth noting that you are unlikely to get iOS updates for your phone beyond September next year, unsure how this will affect things, but it's a separate issue to work out closer to the time

Does the fact that I am on giffgaff, not directly with O2 make any difference?

Yeah that's irrelevant really unless you are after an LTE version with esim, not sure if Giffgaff offer them yet.

Only if you wanted a cellular one, you'd need to be on EE, O2 or Vodafone in order to set it up with a cellular plan. No real benefit unless you're planning to be out without your phone.

The non-cellular works with everything.

Just to piggy back on this thread please....

I am also considering one of these, our family situation with phones is this at the moment:

1x Vodafone (works phone) iPhone 8
1x EE iPhone 11
1x o2 iPhone XR

All of them on contract, mine is the Vodafone works phone. I would like to pair it with my works phone, does anybody know if would this be possible please? would I be able to use it instead of the phone as this potentially appeals to me. Could I pair the watch with either my partners o2 or my sons EE or does it have to be paired with my own/works vodafone?

thanks

As far as I know (having done it!) it can be paired and unpaired with any iPhone. I have paired to two (separately).

For you to benefit from it, it would need to be paired with your phone. Otherwise, you will be receiving calls and texts routed from your partner's or son's phone.

As for pairing it with your own phone, you will have absolutely no problem there UNLESS you want to opt for a cellular model. I've not done it myself, but I would guess you will come up with a barrier to signing up for the cellular data plan on when setting the watch up as you're not the account holder.

Without the cellular functionality, you will need to either be near your iPhone (Bluetooth) or on a WiFi network to take advantage of the Apple Watch's full functionality. Away from the phone without WiFi, you're limited to basically just GPS workout functionality and any offline music or podcasts you've synced.

Thanks, appreciate the reply you have answered my question. No real point in having one if it's not cellular so it's a bit of a non starter for me.
