Having never really gelled with my Cupra ST 4Drive and with the arrival of the Tuscan it was time to realign the cars to give us a better mix.

As whatever replaced the Cupra would be driven by my wife in the week as I'm fortunate to work from home it was only fair to give her a big say in what was chosen and she only really had one request - a higher seating position - SUV it was, not my preference but got to keep the better half happy

Initially we went looking at Sportages, Qashqais and Kadjars, all appealed in numerous ways but there was not that "want" registering with the OH. I suggested we look at Skoda which was initially dismissed but I ignored her and took her anyway.

She was immediately impressed by the Kodiaq she saw, liking the little touches that I suppose only women appreciate (ice scraper in the filler cap, door edge protectors, suction bits on bottom of cupholder tray etc) but she thought it might be a bit too big until I pointed out it was actually 6" shorter than the 650 that she has no issues with driving.

We got figures for the spec we wanted and then she went all sensible and started to consider the Karoq - figures wise it turned out to be more expensive than the Kodiaq for the same equipment (bar a couple of minor differences).

Concerns over the abilities of the 1.5TSi engine were erased after a test drive, whilst no performance car, it was smooth and responsive and quick enough for how its going to be used

As the 13 week factory lead time coincides perfectly with the time I wanted to offload the Cupra the deal was done and a Kodiaq ordered.

Have to say that the service provided by our local Skoda dealer has been exceptionally good, informative without being pushy and generally made it a pleasant experience

Left the colour and wheel choice to the OH and I'm quite happy with her selection

We've had a one for 18 months and it's great. A 4x4 190TDi Edition.

Can't fault it at all. It just does every thing well without fuss and the little touches do help. The velcro/plastic angled bits for keeping boxes from flying around the boot are genius. You won't be disappointed.

I explained it to my OH that Skoda does not really do headline grabbing but it does do thinking about how vehicles are used by real people in the real world, they are a very rational brand. As an SUV is designed to be useful and practical it figures that an SUV from Skoda is probably going to work extremely well.

I must admit to being pretty impressed with the showroom example, the Columbus nav / infotainment is far slicker than the one in my Cupra
