They look familiar, I'm sure something my parents had, once upon a time, but now can't quite remember.
If you Google Image search them, you get guns!!
Just asked my elderly colleague who knows loads of useless information; all those years being alive!!
He has suggested they may be net curtain roads.

they are legs for a stool.
You put them on the stool and when you sit on the stool they compress and bounce. Very useful in an office if you need to bounce to places. such as the photocopier
The more legs you attached the higher you bounce and the more fun you could have at work. Health and safety regulations killed off the use of these stool legs in the early 1980s mainly due to people returning from the canteen spilling their coffees on the office carpet + neck and back injuries.

Yep they look familiar and purposeful to me, but I really can't get it. I've tried all the logical terms on the internet, but no success.
They don't slot together, and they're too small for curtain poles. The fact that one retracts into the other and there were originally buffers on one end of each, suggests some sort of purpose but I can't work it out. Intrigued as much as anything.

In a similar vein - and I'd asked this a while ago but no success - any idea what this bracket is for?
Maybe a foot across. Think it might be something to do with a Nissan as it came with a couple Nissan bits and pieces I got hold of. Looks like some sort of tow eye lashing point or something. Has a letter B on it, but no other identifying numbers.
