I have a 2015 Fiesta ST Mountune with under 28k on the clock. I love it and it does everything I want it to do but cramming 3 people in the back can be snug and 3 doors are inconvenient when I do. Picking up DIY stuff can also limit the type of load.

So I have been considering a newer replacement but have pretty much rejected things like Foci, Civics and so forth.

Being retired, I don't like spending money unless it seems good value. The three cars I have pared down to are:

2018 on Insignia Grand Sport 200 bhp - these are very good value at the moment for about £16-17k but the colour choice is poor, only a metallic grey one locally but likely to be the best deal/fastest depreciator.

2017 Skoda Superb 280 4x4 Laurin and Klement - this is my luxury choice with everything fully loaded and I prefer the chrome to the Sportline blacked out versions. Colour is again an issue though a metallic brown one, locally, has a strange attraction (black is harder to find). 21k.

Third and most expensive is my favourite, a new/pre reg 19 Hyundai i30N which is around £23-24k. This is really more than I want to pay and I have ruled out the Mégane RS as being too hardcore/loud and two round that price are the harsher Cup versions.

Needles to say, I can't make a decision. All are the same to insure and tax so I will probably end up hanging on to the Fiesta.

So what disparate cars have you considered and what did you end up with. Did you regret your choice or wish you'd done it earlier?

When I’ve bought cheap cars it’s much more random in terms of type and brand. I’m more interested in it’s condition and history than anything else. I’ve only had a few cars that I consider ‘nice’ but when I have bought those each time, it was always things of a similar type size and price that I compared e.g. 5er XF Eclass etc

If the only thing putting you off the i30 is the cost then how about an older one?

If you are happy to consider the other cars at 2018 reg then how about something like this https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201... ?

That's the cooking 250ps version without the eLSD. It has to be the Performance 275ps version to make it worthwhile. Those wheels are terrible too.

Personally I'd go for the Superb as I'm a big fan of big cushy estates.

Have you considered one of these? - http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2019... - 345BHP, decent amount of space, and rare enough to be unlikely to depreciate too aggressively.

Alternatively, a bit more out there would be a petrol Alpina B10, or B3. Will be older, but hold their value like few other cars, are extremely rare, and you'd have a chunk of cash to keep it perfect.

^ that Volvo looks great.
Out of the three you listed the i30 is going to be the most fun if you enjoy spirited driving but I would imagine it’s slightly cramped for 3 in the back.
I suppose if load lugging and people carrying is your preference it has to be the Skoda.
Ive had estates for years and they are very practical and will miss one when I change next year.

What about a Golf R estate?..lots available sub £20k.
Or a 330i/340i estate?..rare but worth hunting out possibly.
MINI Clubman Cooper S?

Cheers,

Chris
