I'm currently going through a phase of not knowing what car I want. I have an M2 CS on order, and want something to fill the gap. My commute is varied, some days its 2 miles to the station, others its an 80 mile motorway round trip to the office. Mileage is around 15k miles per year, My budget is ideally £4k max, my shortlist is as follows
ep3 type r 145k miles £1850
Cat D 335d, 91k miles, new injectors, brake discs and pads & lower suspension arms £4000
2001 Accord Type r 120k miles £3500
2006 Nissan 350z 126k miles £3000
To be honest, I'm really not sure which way to go - the 350z is the outside choice due to running costs, but the other 3 have me split. What are peoples thoughts / opinions?
Any other alternatives welcome

Mk3 Mondeo diesel or something similar from that class, spend £750 or less. There is no point spending 4k on a stop gap car and of those you have listed none will move on quickly so you will be left with 2 lots of tax and insurance until they sell.
Out of your list I would take the Accord, as a wild card C30 T5 or Focus ST.

Thing is, I will probably keep a second car after I get the M2 for site visits etc. Out of your list I would take the Accord, as a wild card C30 T5 or Focus ST.
I love cars, and don't want to drive a mundane box - C30 t5 and focus ST are essentially the same chassis and engine arent they?
I drive a Mondeo & they're a decent steer as well as making me enjoy my toys as it's different.
1.4T Alfa Giulietta Veloce haggle & you'll get this for your max budget, this ticks a lot of boxes with your annual mileage & running costs.

You're always recommending the Giulietta. I've driven a few of them and after two minutes the lack of where to put your left foot gets seriously annoying. They don't drive well either. 1.4T Alfa Giulietta Veloce haggle & you'll get this for your max budget, this ticks a lot of boxes with your annual mileage & running costs.

The Mazda 3 MPS you've linked has issues. The EML and lack of any warranty would make me run a mile.
Went for the accord type r - and what a car!!
Bought off a pair of guys who used it as a track car - mechanically it is 100%, has cold air induction and vtec coming in at 4500 rpm - has track tyres on it now, and a spare set of rims for a set of road tyres. Th bodywork is full of little marks, but there is no rust - Wish I'd taken the jump years ago!!
