Gentlefolk,

My girlfriend's MP3 player now refuses to act as a mp3 player. It is a USB pen drive 512Mb mp3 player with radio and voice recorder - but with no registered manufacturer (a search on the net has yet to confirm its identity though mysteriously a website set up by someone else seeking a similar product's identity calls it "George").
It also (rather strangely) will work on a USB 1.1 port (as a USB drive) but not a USB 2.0 port (though it will detect as a drive it will not list its contents) - and I thought they were backwards compatible.
So in my hour of need can the PH save my masculinity?

Had similar problems with my sister's unbranded mp3 player and discovered 2 things:

1. it needed reformatting (although it had been working fine before)

2. it turned itself off after x minutes of no use (even when connected to USB), meaning it was detected as e: but couldn't be written to/read from.

HTH

I've tried the reformatting thing - changed the volume lable.....

USB 1.1 will open files and transfer files back and forth to my hearts content.
USB 2.0 will detect the new volume lable but not the tracks on the drive at all.

Still refuses to act as a stand alone mp3 player - hence the desire to refresh the firmware and see if that helps. Ho hum a extended search into the netherhells of the internet ether beckons....

What file format did you use when you reformatted it? I can use mine as a storage device with any format but the MP3 player only works if it is formatted as FAT.

That might be a problem. Some need to be formatted as FAT, not FAT32.

I'll give it a try - though I have to use my housemates pc as my laptop only has USB 2.0 ports...

Next time I think I'll just say "its broken - I'll buy you a new one......"

"George" is a name coined by Dan (of www.dansdata.com) for a generic MP3 player that he reviewed. He then reviewed a couple of other MP3 players of a similar type, giving them names as well. IIRC he has links to some firmware updates for the players, either in the reviews, or in one of the letters pages.
