Can anyone tell me whether it is OK to give out an employees address to such people as the Police when they are in the course of an investigation without landing yourself in a possible legal situation?

It's probably illegal NOT to.
The Data Protection Act does not apply to everybody - just ceratin types of businesses and organisations.
