i can't find All Season tyres to replace the front tyre, size 225/40/R19

They only come in 255/35/R19

Will that fit the front? Downsides?

The other option is getting 18inch alloys, but thats going to be expensive. Any other options I can consider. I'm driving to the Pyrenees in three days!

I'm looking at Cross Climate Plus all season, as it has the 3 Peaks Mountain SnowFlake (3PMSF)

Thanks

You'll be fine going to 255/35/19s smile

They're 2mm different, 0.3% different, the max allowed is 2.5% +/-, so you're well within tolerance

You may just need to change the tyre pressures to allow for the smaller sidewall smile

Tyre calc here for your info: https://www.tyresave.co.uk/tyre-size-calculator/

Thanks!

Are the 255's only 2mm wider then the 225's ?

Thats a relief.

I was thinking of just getting the rear tyres changed, as the size is available. And sticking a snow chain on the front if I get stuck.

I'd be concerned that the extra 30mm in width might cause a problem? I can't imagine my 255 rear tyres would fit on my front wheels, which naturally take 225s......

Thanks, I can't seem to get a answer to this question. Phoned Michelin who told me to check my handbook, tried calling KwikFit but they didn't have a clue.

I might just get the rears fitted for now.

Screenshot of tyre calculator results:

Generally, front wheel wells have a lot more room in them than the rears, so 255s, IMO, will fit fine. For instance, the E39s have 265 rears, folks are known to run 9" Style 37s all round with 265 tyres all round, instead of 235s up front and no issues

Although, not sure if the OPs on lowered suspension etc

Fitting in the wheel well won't be an issue, but I doubt they'd comfortably fit on the rim if it's normally running 225 width

They're wider but not that much less sidewall, can't see it being an issue personally as 225/40s aren't that plump smile

Actually to be fair to you my 225/40/18s do have a *very* subtle stretch on the front, and that's meant to be a factory fitment!

Its the 440i on the stock 19inch rims, with the stock runflats, non-lowered.

Front tyre: 225/40/19

Rear tyre: 255/35/19

Haven't found good all seasons to fit the front 225/40/19 - and the 255 is a 30mm difference.

Has anyone tried regular snowchains on 19inch 440i wheels?

Thanks

Where are you getting 30mm from?

Have you looked at the tyre calc results?

I did yes, as you mentioned it said 2mm difference, well within the allowance.

However, does the 255 not mean 255mm width, and the 225 is 225mm width? The difference between the two is where I got the 30mm width difference.

However, the link you posted said its a 2mm difference.

Obviously I'm confused.

I would guess you are correct with the 30mm . Quite noticeable when you have both sizes together.

Is it as simple as that though? Thought when the sizes changed its not just a simple width measurement

Hence what the tyre calculator states

That's 2mm diameter of the wheel difference.

The width of the tyre is indeed 225mm or 255mm in this instance, so yes 30 mm difference in width.

Worth checking if the standard 4 series can accommodate that width up front (I imagine it could) but the rims are not designed to have tyres that much wider.

Thanks MikeM6, what would be the best way to check if the rims can take a 30mm wider wheel, on the stock 19inch rims. And thanks for clarifying the issue.

Also, will there be a handling difference with 255mm front wheels.

Also at this point I'm just wondering if I should get a new set of alloys and buy winter wheels instead.

Very true. If the alloys only 8" wide, 255 simply won't work, 8.5-9" minimum IIRC

My advice re this has always been buy the smallest alloys you can fit over your brakes and stick with the same sized tyres all round.

2nd hand alloys are ideal, but seen if somewhere like Mr Winter Wheels can sort you out
