sorry if this has been done to death.

My tax is up for renewal. I'd like to keep my bike insured, but throughout winter it is in a garage so i'd like to postpone taxing it again until its warmer. Is this possible or does it invalidate your insurance? I've looked around online, but I can only find instances of SORN'ing, (no tax or insurance) but nothing that deals specifically with my query.

is SORNing the only way?

phoning my cheapskate insurance is a slow painful death, so to spare myself the pain of their hold music, can anybody please give a definitive answer?

It will be off the road, i just would like to avoid paying for tax whilst its not used

edit - really balsed up this thread...

SORN merely tells the DVLA that you're not using it on the road until the declaration changes (i.e. it's sold, scrapped or taxed).

What it does means insurance-wise is that if it's taxed it has to be insured - i.e. if it's not SORN and you don't have insurance that's an offence.

I have 4 bikes and a car on sorn in my garage whilst being insured. One of the bikes has no MOT either.

It's ok to sorn while insured.

Yep, lots of fair-weather bikers do. I might next year if I get something I want to use more in winter than my Monster, although the tax is only 50 quid or so I seem to remember?

My bike tax is up at the end of this of this month. I expect I will sorn it until spring time as I don’t need to use it for the next few months, especially after the ice on the roads and pavements last night.
It will remained insured. Done it before and never had any hassle over it.

Standard practice for a lot of people.
MIne got SORNed 30th November, not even told the insurance company. You should tell them if it is being kept at a different address, or in the garage where normally it's left outside etc

Mine has been on SORN but remains insured for the past few years (long story), I don't want to MOT or tax the thing but I also want to protect my belongings should it get stolen or the garage burn down, etc.

It's a separate issue. It's either Taxed or it's SORN (which is free and a 5 minute job online) with no other options. There's no insurance aspect to it.

What you're thinking of is that if the bike is taxed, the Gov assume it's being used, so want to know why the eff you haven't insured it.

When I had a UK car in Italy I was told by my insurance company specifically that there as no requirement to have UK tax paid, I'd be insured driving about Italy in it, and arguably the UK, but there's a no-tax offence of course once I'm off the boat onto our green and pleasant land..

Unless you have it booked in for a pre-arranged mot appointment and couldn't tax it previously as the mot had expired.

It's 100 per year. If you have a couple of big bikes and only use them for 6 months why waste 100.

S1000RR is in the garage without a MOT and is SORN, but is insured. Needs a new battery - just have not sorted it yet.

Because it's buttons!

I bought a BMW Z4MC yesterday that costs £555 a year for tax!

So it won't be taxed until the New Year. eek
