I just can't understand how good the reviews were for the original.
The story was utterly dire. The contrivances to drive the plot forward were ridiculous.
That nail on the stairs...
I really enjoyed he first one as long as I didn't think about it at all. Analysing it afterwards there are endless forced bits, illogical bits and so on that it all just seems ridiculous. The story was utterly dire. The contrivances to drive the plot forward were ridiculous.

the fact the World's governments couldn't work out they didn't like noise...
Yup, for creatures that are ultra-sensitive to air vibrations, a bit of short wave white noise blasted out at 10K Decibels would bethe first thing scientists might have tried to disable the ugly buggers.
A fully operational USA couldn't mobilise support for days to help one of their own states during the floods, so it's funny how much credit is given to 'governments' when trying to pick apart movie plots. Assuming this was a sudden and devastating attack, a shell of a government is not going to co-ordinate a response to an unknown alien attack with any sort of effectiveness.
I think enjoyment of the first film hinges on the experience. I watched it in a sold out and completely silent theatre (twice) and it was incredible as a shared experience, one of my most memorable cinema trips full stop. Re-watching it at home with the usual distractions was nowhere near as impactful.

I liked the first one, but for me, as for plot, with all the time they had on their hands, it seemed inconceivable that they didn't set time aside to prepare a better bunker, instead of that hole in the barn with a mattress over the top.
I'd of spent all of my time digging and kitting that out better, especially with an impending LOUD baby on the way.
Enjoyed it though, the creatures were definitely scary, and the nail scene was a goodun

I won't be watching the trailer but very much looking forward to seeing the film, going into the first movie with no knowledge was amazing, sold out screening, not a sound made by anyone during the entire film...one of my all time favourite cinema experiences.
The sorts of films cinemas with an audience are made for, it didn't translate nearly as well to home viewing in my opinion.

Went to see this last night, my guess is that people who didn't like the 'gimmick' of the first film may enjoy this more as it's much closer to a straight horror film.
I really enjoyed it, it doesn't outstay its welcome, just over 90 minutes, and 15 minutes or so of that is an excellent prologue which is very Spielberg. Seems to be getting excellent reviews across the board so I don't think this is just me being relieved to finally be back at the cinema!
For those who had issues with the logistics and science etc this isn't going to win you over, although I think for those that had an issue with the US military not figuring out how to deal with them, this does show just how quickly the world is overrun by the things, one minute there is a TV broadcast in China showing the devastation, 10 minutes later the US is being ripped apart.
