I bought my S1 last year and shortly thereafter transferred my personal plate on to it. I had taken the number plates off my previous car and intended to throw them away. As a stop gap I put them on the Lotus, but they were 'full size' and look a bit big and clumsy, and a bit low at the front end.

Question is, I was thinking about having new plates made up but with all of these silly number plate regs will they allow me to have the slightly smaller plates? I have been to the DVLA web site but can't make sense of all the numbers (11mm this and X mm slant). Any body had plates made and what can you get away with?

I was thinking about going to 'fancyplates' and getting a smaller set made in Ireland to avoid the regs.but don't want the law all over me. If I do go fancyplates I don't want to look like a boy racer or a chav, so has anybody seen a Liz with cool plates (and I don't mean italics and pictures of the statue of liberty). My S1 is Titanium with black leather, and they do ofer some colour coding of plates if anybody has views on that? I see they offer the Lotus logo too.

You can potentially be pulled for anything non standard.

However, that hasn't stopped me getting 3/4 size plate on the front (fits really nicely), with Lotus logo from fancyplates.

Standard font (otherwise it will look chav).

Ok, so my spacing might be a little bit, erm, wrong, but so far no complaints from BiB.

The plate is perfectly legible. Too legible infact - just got a congestion charge fine through the post yesterday. The picture they took is nice though!

Did you consider a vinyl stick on for the front? I know its illegal with a fine of up to £1,000 but has anyone been prosecuted?

Ive had a 3/4 sized front plate on for 3 years - no probs, seen loads of coppers. My friend has a stick on plate on the front clam, last 4 years, no probs either.

Keep the font legal and legible and you will be OK - a 3/4 sized front plate dosent look out of place on an Elise.....

Keep mine in the boot. Works out very cheap for the congestion charge. Nice.
