Clickbaited smile The 0-60 time is 16.5 seconds and it has 59bhp!

I turned 17 on the 18th - and as I love cars I had to go and pick one up on my birthday!

I needed a fairly spacious, refined and very comfortable small car with good economy.
I went to a Ford dealership and sat in a 16 plate Fiesta Zetec. I was disappointed - although it had a gem of an engine, and the styling and handling was sharp, the interior was disappointing and old hat. They had a 16 plate Polo on the forecourt that caught my eye - it was Urano grey, and there wasn’t a single blemish on it at all, inside or outside. It’s quiet, composed and refined and that’s why I ended up walking away with that instead - not to mention it was £400 cheaper to insure (crazy!)

It’s literally so spartan that my mother was shocked at the lack of equipment

It DOESN’T have

Air conditioning
Remote central locking
Alloy wheels
Cruise

But it does have 5 seats, a DAB radio, bluetooth, Aux in and a USB port with a touchscreen which is all the modern teenager wants nowadays.

It’s very clean.

1 owner, under 20000 miles, 2 keys, a full size spare, full Volkswagen service history, new tyres, new mats, new headlight seals, a fresh 12 month MOT, a fresh service.

It has been very well looked after, the price wasn’t amazing for the spec however, at £6500 after haggling, but I bought it mainly based on the proximity to me and the peace of mind with 2 years warranty included.

I’m thinking about swapping to a leather wheel and the RCD330 system with carplay - anyone got advice about swapping to that?

Thanks for looking.

So you put the thrill of driving behind a soft touch dash .....

With the negative out of the way, what ever happened to spending £1000 on a banger and loving your first car because you had to constantly fix it ?

Enjoy the car and concentrate on the other idiots on the road.

I am looking at having a Polo, either a 1.0 TSi to replace my wife’s 13 plate Fabia, or a GTI to replace my 335d (and down-size, but that will be a very hard decision). I sat in both a Polo and a Golf, both new, in a VW showroom: to be honest the Polo was a much nicer place to be. I did my usual, adjust drivers seat for me, then sat behind it as well. I am convinced the Polo was more roomy in the rear.

Good luck, update us on the driving experience, especially those things that will be the same across engine range, controls, doors, entry and exit etc.

(ETA, I also looked at a T-ROC and a Touareg, I cant remember which, but one had shocking ‘orange-peel’ paint, it almost looked deliberate)

I wasn't aware there was a modern car available without these!

RE Trimming the wheel, Auto Trim Leicester (0116 2169920) are your people. If they're good enough that Gray Paul Ferrari use them....

God I love an ultra base spec car. Try not to end up doing what everyone else does and covering it in CuLtUrE gAnG stickers, looks like a nice buy. Solid cars, a few mates have them and they seem really well put together.

Driving enjoyment was not key to a purchase. My journeys are a short motorway jaunt and sitting in traffic for a while, not trashing down a B road every day? Who said I didn’t value driving enjoyment? We can’t claim the Ford Fiesta is the last word in driving enjoyment, otherwise everybody would have a Fiesta and Pistonheads would be called Fiestaforums.co.uk.

It has a nice peppy three cylinder which is great fun to wring that last horsepower out of and makes a half decent noise too. Light steering but it is a bit roly poly.

Also, you can love a car for being solid and dependable too smile

Thanks for looking

Don’t worry, I’m the opposite of scene!

To be fair it's handy in the winter time to stop the windows misting up.

You've got anti-lock brakes, power steering, fuel injection, a five-speed gearbox and even colour-coded bumpers/mirrors. That's practically a limo compared to my first car!

Like most in your shoes, I bet you’ll be bored of it in a year or two and desperate for something faster.

Suggest not modifying it and saving for the Golf GTI that replaces it... smile

Took the words out of my dad’s mouth haha.

I’ll defend myself and say the last is not true - grey plastic is just a coincidence as the paint is also grey wink

A leather steering wheel and an updated stereo are extremely easy mods. Have a look at eBay Germany.

The stereo is harder than I thought. The S model (the one I have) has the head unit located in the DIN area. The SE and above have the HU located in the glovebox. They require different wiring.

An OEM replacement would be the RCD330+ which has factory Apple Carplay support has a different dock connector and requires an MIB emulator too. It needs different fascia plates. Most aftermarket head units look cheap and tacky yet cost a lot.

The leather steering wheel is an easy upgrade, but I’m worried about killing myself with an airbag. You see, I am not a practical person. I am extremely bad at doing anything non academic!

This is so true, get the years NCB under your belt and save any money for a sporty car once insurance become more sensible. When I was 17, I spent a fortune on the car, and now in hindsight was a complete waste as within near two years I bought another car. For the record I went from an Orion 1.6GL (was my father car from new) to a RS turbo. Proper bees knees back in the day, then year later sold that and got a Cosworth at 19. Kept that one for 7 years lol.
