Ok, I picked this up today, I have a stack of receipts with it, Recent-ish DMF, Clutch, Engine mounts, Timing and auxiliary belts, Intercooler etc. All done by a reputed Volvo specialist, Drives lovely, 233,000 miles!! Took the oil filler cap off and looked in, Lovely and clean, No sign of gunk or neglect here! 6 months ticket on it, Decent MOT history, Pretty tidy and all for £510, Even the aircon works! Got the dash fault, 1 minute it works fine the next minute everything is going nuts! £80 fix i hope? Drove it 150 miles home, Sounds decent for a diesel! So far i love it! New to D5 ownership so fill me in! Advert pic by the way, It was pissing down by the time i got it home!

Excellent choice.

I've owned many Volvo's over the years and the D5 euro 3 is a peach.

A tuning box wakes these up and makes them as quick as the 185 euro 4.

There's lots of things you can do with these to improve and upgrade.

£510! Can’t complain with that with so many receipts too.
Enjoy.

Great buy. Kinda wish I had an Eu3 as the Eu4 has all sorts of annoying emissions bks on it.

Fabulous machines, how is the hand brake, royal pain in the ash putting the cables in, I do miss mine.
I’m currently negotiating to buy a 1997 20v.

Excellent choice. Here is the thread detailing the trials and tribulations I have had with mine (which is the same colour and only 2k miles off yours at the moment) if you were interested.

Enjoy the waft!

The Aux and cambelt are the main weakness these have, along with rear calipers. They seize on really badly. Handbrake tends to be a bit of a pig, too.

Otherwise they're great, the Volvo 5 cylinder unit is pretty indestructible. 233,000 miles should be just fine for the engine. The police liked these for a reason.

The computer is wildly optimistic with regards to fuel economy though. hehe

Lovely. I love a big mile car, where most people see it as ready to scrap there should be plenty of life left in it yet.

Thanks for the link to your thread, Will have a read tonight with a beer! Handbrake cables and handbrake shoes and new rear calipers done in 2014 so hopefully a bit of life in them yet, Front discs and pads 6 months ago, Steering rack inner joints done, Loads of receipts for servicing and previous work done including overhauled injectors with new nozzles and high pressure seals in 2017, Timing belt and auxiliary belt done 4 years ago using genuine parts but i am going to shove another Gen volvo timing belt kit on for peace of mind, You can pick a kit up for about £80, Also an auxiliary belt and new tensioner going on at the same time as well, As stated in my original post DMF, Clutch, Engine mounts and intercooler done in 2014, Fishers Volvo in Gloucester have done most of the work, Will keep thread updated as i tackle the jobs, Cheers for the feedback.

Looks like yours has had all the expensive work done already. Are you planning on doing the timing belt yourself? If so, check out SiRobb on YouTube, he has a load of D5 maintenance videos. I’ve not needed to do mine yet but it certainly doesn’t look beyond even a novice home spannerer like me. No need for removing engine mounts or anything!

Receipts tot up to 9K! Had a quick drive tonight, All of a sudden accelleration has gone flat, The dash is tits up so i can't see what the tacho is doing or anything else! Would the dash problem interfere with the way the engine runs? I'm really old school mechanic wise! Do these suffer with maf issues like the old Audi/Vag stuff, Feels the same to me? As i had a 96 A4 TDI that went flat on accelleration when the MAF sensor went bust, Advice appreciated, Need some advice here guys and girls! Cheers.

It does sound airflow related to me but I’m far from an expert. Have you signed up to the Volvo forums? Lots of helpful beards on there. Could also try the Volvo owners UK and Volvo V70/S70 owners groups if you’re on Facebook, they can be quite helpful.

Ours did that and went into limp home mode. Cured with a new fuel filter.

Could just be a bit flat due to the engine being cold. Check it out when you get chance to do a longer drive

Disconnect the MAF connector and see how it runs. Should tell you if that’s at fault

The best do it all car I've owned so far.

Sold mine for more than you paid with 299k on it.

Cheers to everyone for taking the time to respond, Ive started collecting service items, Ive got my oil (Shell helix ultra 5w/40 fully synth), Filter (Mann) and sump washer (Febi/Bilstein) and an egr blank, I believe early D5's don't have a fit if you fit one of these? EGT's go up so in my book the diesel combust's better! Ive got some liqui moly diesel purge on it's way as well, Used this on my old 850 TDI! Thats going in with a new fuel filter, Will keep this updated with progress if anyone's still interested? smile

Is it quite smokey? Check for boost leaks if so (if you have an air compressor, a boost leak test is fairly easy). I had an S80 D5 where the intercooler ruptured! Also probably worth taking out the EGR for a clean if you haven't already.

Great bargain car for the price, enjoy!

Seems to run pretty clean, Booting it and checking in my mirrors it looked fine! It's had a new intercooler so i hope thats taken care of, EGR blanks going on both end's and i'm taking all associated pipework and inlet manifold off and cleaning it all out, I did this on my 850TDI and it transformed it, Thanks for the input, Much appreciated smile
