Bang on the head - what next

On Tuesday last week my 13 year old lad was knocked off his bike on the way home from school. He wasn’t wearing a helmet! To cut a long story short he ended up having emergency surgery to remove an extradural haematoma and spent 5 days on the critical care unit before being moved to a ward today. He appears to be recovering as well as can be expected at this time.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience of what the future may hold, short term and long term. We’ll find out more tomorrow as he is due to see the neurologist but first hand experience would be good to hear.

I was riding bikes from the age of 8 and never wore a helmet until about 15 years ago (I'm now 66). Was on a charity cycle ride about 20 year ago and a lad came off his bike as a car was passing. He was wearing a helmet, his head hit the side of the car as he went down, split the helmet open but saved his head.
Even that didn't persuade me to start with a helmet, It was probably getting my now 14 year old out on a bike that started me wearing one.

Thanks for all the best wishes. He’s making good progress.

The driver did stop and the Police are investigating the incident but at the minute that’s the last of my worries!
