A Spit or Lancaster would to me anyhow, I genuinely have tears in my eyes when one of those comes over.

One of our cats is called Spits... When he purrs it's so nasal, sounds like a single Merlin on a nice easy cruise, throaty and carb throbbing sort of sound.

The other guy sometimes sounds like a Lancaster, four Merlins all at 90 degrees firing to each other, smoother and more constant.

I think Argonaut is fitted with a Pratt and Whitney. I was implying that a Sea Fury with a Centaurus sounds better than one with a Pratt and Whitney.

I know this is sacrilege but I prefer the lump in the 109 sound wise!! Most are fakes but the odd proper one remains and it sounds incredible

And I also love hearing the incredible rare stuff like a proper 190 engine (only one I believe) and the Zero, very gruff, but you can feel the power.

There are no "fakes". The 109 came in a myriad of varieties over its production life (which was over 20 years) had a whole range of engines.

Prototype - Rolls Royce Kestrel
A to D versions - Junkers 210
E and F versions - Daimler Benz 601
G and K versions - Daimler Benz 605
Avia S99 - Daimler Benz 605
Avia S199 - Junkers 211
Hispano HA-1112 Initially a Hispano engine and later, the Rolls Royce Merlin

The only "fakery" is that most of the flying Hispanos today are painted in Luftwaffe markings. This is because they are more popular at airshows and generally more useful for TV and film work if carrying German colours.
There are some genuine or reconstructed E and G models flying as well.

My guess is he's referring to the handfull of post war built Buchon's that have been re-engined with DB605's to 'fake' a Me109G.

Not sacrilege, I felt the same way after hearing 'Black 6' make its public debut at Duxford in Sept 1991......that blower whine plus the noise of that inertial starter that had to be hand cranked....and the sound of the big DB catching after engaging the starter

I wasn't sure what he was on about really. The Buchon is, from the firewall back, essentially a 109G anyway - as is the S-199. Swapping engines about on the 109 design was something Messerschmitt themselves did a number of times.

As far s I know, there are no "genuine" Fw190s knocking about but there are some fine reproductions about and at least one is going to have a genuine BMW801 engine. That should be great to see in the air.

Oh there is.

This Fw190A was found in a forest in Russia near St.Petersburg in 1989, ironically the same year the pilot that crashed landed it there passed away, without ever knowing his Fw190 had been found again. It was brought out of Russia by the late Jim Pearce.



It was eventually bought by Paul Allen's FHC, and underwent a full restoration, retaining about 80% of its original structure, such was its preserved state.
Its original BMW 801 engine was rebuilt and today it fly's from its Seattle base, the only original Fw190 flying.
