Need to change my car as repair bills are getting too regular and high.

I am thinking of buying new (forst time) but have little experience of negotiating with a dealer so I have a few questions..

NEW CAR.

1. How much is it realisticly possible to knock them down from MRP - assume £30k car

2. How much is it realistically possible to knock them down if they already have it discounted from the MRP- assume current discount £1k

3. Is it realistically possible to get the dealer to match a bank loan APR I can get - they advertise 5.9% I can get 3.3%

4. How much room do I have on the trade in value price

USED CAR.

5. How much is it realisticly possible to knock them down from their advertised used price - assume £28k on original £30k MRP

6. Is it realistically possible to get the dealer to match a bank loan APR I can get - they advertise 9.9% I can get 3.3%

7. Is trade value i am likely to be offered the same whether I am buyin new or used car

If you can answer any/all of these I would be much appreciared

1. Use www.broadspeed.com,www.drivethedeal.com, etc to find the best possible price. Ask your dealer to price match.

2. See above

3. Maybe. If they dont, use the cheap bank loan

4. Why trade it in? What about selling it privately, checking the online buying sites, check other local car dealers selling similar (ring and ask to speak to the "used car buyer").

5. Find the cheapest used price for the car you want on autotrader, go deal with them. Its better to get £10 off a car at £27,000 than £1,000 off the same car at £28,000 somewhere else.

6. Maybe. Ask. If they cant use the bank loan.

7. Yes.

@Deep Thought

Perfect my friend that is very helpful. Point 5 in particular as you are right why try and get one dealer to match another, when you could directly the first dealer and haggle some more.

Thanks for answers

New you’ll be able to spec it exactly as you want - at a cost. It’s the ultimate hassle free option.

Used you’ll have to search and wait until the spec you want comes along or you’ll have to simply make a compromise.

Now that may not be too important to you so it makes it easier.

Sometimes you can get deals in brand new cars that end up costing you LaeSS than buying used due to incentives and that everything is brand new so you’ll not have to replace it / consumables.

Contract hire /lease deals they have specials on often but it might not be the model or spec your after instead you go down the route of white goods a to b motoring. Sometimes you’ll find epic deals like there were in the F10 M5

Every car costs money to run some are hassle free cost more others cheaper. It more effort.

Electric i3 or a Zoe etc could be a perfect vehicle for you. The I3 is quicker 0-30mph than the E92 M3 4v8...

What is your budget?

This

Depends on the manufacturer, the car, the spec, time of year, how long it’s been in stock, the list goes on....

Assuming i use the 3.3% APR from garage or bank, and with a £2500 trade in, I cn probably goto £30k on a PCP over 4 years. Looking at an SUV for family of 5 and been looking at the Volvo XC40, VW Tiguan, although though open to others.

Quick look and leasing seems to be cheaper than PCP for the same cars, but im worried about keeping the car clean enough with three kids jumping in and out. I'd also be stuck with my current car to try and sell privately. I was therefore thinking of using PCP or creating my own PCP with the 3.3% bank loan

XC40 and Tiguan are very different size wise. We are in a similar position, XC40 is much smaller than a Tiguan, XC60 is closer to the Tiguan. We have recently looked at both!

I will need to go back and sit in them again. I thought when we sat three in the back the Tiguan felt a little smaller (width wise).
XC60 is too expensive for us. We have been considering: the

X-Trail (looks a bit dated inside)
Tiguan (trim looks a little dull)
XC40
Land Rover Discovery sport (again probably too expensive for us, and fuel economy looks very poor)
Skoda Kodiaq

What other cars have you been considering ? Are you doing PCP/HP/Bank loan ?

We aren’t buying new, looking at 1-2 years old. Likely PCP or bank loan.
We’ve got a 2nd little one on the way so looking for decent space inside and a good size boot (coming from a mk7 Golf). We’ve looked at:
-Tiguan R-line
-Xc60 (new 2018 shape & 2017 model) - new models are high tax though but a better looking car
-Skoda Octavia estate & Karoq
-Discovery Sport - dismissed this choice based on the ingenium engine problems and older 2.2 engined cars being older than we want to buy (2015).
-Wild card - Peugeot 3008- Mrs really likes these but I think they may be a little too small

XC40 and Tiguan are in the same size class, though I believe the Tiguan has a bigger boot if it matters to you.

Both of these are available through Drive the deal with good discounts, and this is where I would start when trying to find the best price,
then ring a few dealers and see who will beat it,
if none will, just order from Dtd, this is no hardship, it just means you might end up being referred to a dealer who's possibly far from your home but they do include free delivery,
I've used them several times and no complaints.

We've just been through the same process yet again and ordered a Vw t-roc r-line, managing to get a local dealer to beat the Dtd price by a few hundred pounds,

Despite owning quite a few VW's and having another on order,
if I were in your situation I'd probably go for the Volvo, it carries a bit of a premium over the Tiguan but it's a newer design, will probably depreciate slower, seems to get very good reviews and I personally think it's better looking especially the r design pro trim level, or possibly look at the Bmw X1

Thats interesting. I had dismissed the XC60 and Discovery sport, but actually I've looked at 1 yr old models and the XC60 are quite reasonable. Think the XC60 would be better than the XC40 for us (bigger room).
Have you considered leasing ? Ive never leased a car before but looks like a chaper option rhan HP/PCP

If your happy handing the car back after the lease is up then go for it,

Just be aware that most lease deals are for a basic car in the standard colour with very few options,
as soon as you start adding options the price will very quickly rise, if your not bothered about extras and don't intend keeping the car then there are often good deals about and it can be a good choice.

Good points thanks.

Leasing looks attractive but I would be worried I end up with costly bill at the end of the lease (three kids and car = scuffs, stains etc)

To be honest I have only ever bought used cars using Personal Loans/Cash before so this is my first venture into PCP. My logic is that even when I use a loan to buy a car, when the loans finishes I end up just trading it in for the next car, so thought PCP may be just as good, but also give me the opportunity of owning a nicer car, since you are effectively financing the depreciation not the whole car.
