Is there an easy way to make non smart light fittings smart? Not replacing bulbs talking existing led downlights etc

Do-able, but not cheap.. for example:

Lightwave L21 Smart Series Dimmer, 280 W, 230 V, Stainless Steel, 1 Gang

Do they do them as a grid system? need 3 dimmers and 1 switch really

I’ve not got them but a friend has and rates these Sonoff smart switches.

With virtually all of the smart switches (instead if smart light fittings/bulbs) you will require at the switch end a perm live, a switched live and a neutral.

Nearly every single light switch in the uk is wired only with a live and switched live, no neutral.

So before you go ordering any smart switches, just ensure you have a neutral, also check that the boxes are deep enough as the switches are usually deeper

You can get Zwave modules that fit behind the existing switch (if the back box is deep enough) that don’t require neutrals and make non-smart lights smart

Do you mean so that all the switches act in unison to do "scenes"?

If so, yes. Though you'll likely need a scene plate and/or remote to get what you want. There's also a lot more flexibility if you connect them to a Link Plus AIUI, including Alex/Google Home/IFTTT compatibility (not yet pulled the trigger on one, but will be soon).

Lightwave are a bit marmite. Unlike marmite, I really like their kit - got me out of a few holes with lighting control in my place (old house, re-wiring would be really messy but using a selection of Lightwave products have a good set up).
