Despite googling I can't find an answer, when did it become mandatory to have a Cat fitted ?

Think it was around 1993, although not sure if it was mandatory for the cat to be fitted, or for emissions to be below a certain threshold (which was unlikely to be achieved without a cat).

That was for cars, is it the same for bikes? I thought they always lagged behind for a few years...

Edit: EU2 (i.e. Requires a cat) was mandatory from 2003 I think, possibly with the usual exemptions for models already in production. Some manufacturers would be ahead of that obviously, they usually added it when they're next doing a refresh of a model

Yes. I had a factory standard 1990 Mini Cooper with carb and a cat. I was told by numerous people at the time that it was a waste of time due to the lack of FI etc fuel control. I think it was probably a marketing exercise.

I'll have a google of EU2 - my 2004 KTM hasn't got one nor have the (end of line) 2006 LC4s

I assumed they came in with injection.

My 2003 R6 is fuel injected but has no cat. Cat's for bikes came years later as far as I can recall.

I'm surprised it's so hard to find out - it seems to be 2006

First Google hit for EU2 year finds the Fazer was revised for the 2006 model to include a CAT

A few older KTM models finished production in 06 too - presumably killed by emissions

I think it was around 2006/for 2007.

Only one model I know but my K7 GSXR1000 had a cat as standard but my current K6 model does not.

This was my first point of reference to answer the question. It added a lot of weight to the K7 - fixed easily with a single akropovic 😎. Also one if the reasons the K5/K6 is much lauded over those that followed.

Apparently European GSXR1000 K5/K6 had cat (see Wikipedia).

At least my K6 did not smell like no-cat (I know what that smells like) while my 2002 CBR954RR Blade does, and I always thought 954 had cats, but now I looked on the nets and I cannot find any information supporting this belief of mine.

KTM 950s had carbs and cats, and were produced up until ~2008.

I don’t think it’s specifically that they needed cats on a certain year, they just had to meet the emissions. I think this happened at Euro 4 which affected new production bikes in 2005 and new registrations of existing models got some grace until 2006.
