Hi all

Would appreciated some help.

My 19 year old girl drives a fiat 500 and has two years no claims with marmalade.

My 17 year old boy has been having lessons With an instructor and we want to insure him on the Fiat so we can take him out and then as a named driver, but I am being told it is either not allowed by a lot of insurance companies or over £4k PA to do. Current insurance is £700.

Anyone had success in doing something similar?

Thanks

Josh

We have 3 cars in the family which my wife and I are insured to drive. One of the cars is also insured for our two teenage children (one qualified, one learning). We are careful to rotate the usage of our cars so that the adults remain the primary users of the third car (we do more mileage in it than the kids).

I think your problem may be that the additional young driver is going on a 19 year-olds policy rather than there being a problem with insuring two young drivers on one car.

Thanks.

Yes. I agree I think that is the issue. The reality is the main driver on the Fiat is my daughter. Hmmm haven’t told the 17 year old all this yet. Specifically that we can’t take him out in it. Anyone on here want to do that for me? wink

Will need to think this through.

Loved the Marmalade joke.

The broker (A plan) said that marmalade won’t do this type of policy. My son hasn’t passed his test yet so we wanted to add him as a learner driver. The broker said that once he passed we could add him but the price would be around 4K based on recent experience. Prior to passing marmalade wouldn’t add him at all as the policy is in my daughters name.

Based on the feedback above I will have a shop around.

Thanks.

As a learner they can have their own temporary policy that only applies to the vehicle when they are driving it, they don't have to be a named driver on the vehicle owner/keepers policy. Any accidents they have they aren't claiming off the owner/keepers policy.

Thanks. Will look into that. Given that marmalade have fitted a tracker in the car I do worry that learner driving would show up as journeys with poor scores and then impact my daughters premium.

Then as I think someone else has said, try one of the other L driver ins companies? There's no rule that you can't, it's just up to the insurance companies.

No reason why it should. A Learner will be within the speed limits and not driving at night, as long as they don't do any harsh braking then there isn't much else that would trigger a bad trip.

Insure the learner with a specialist learner policy. They are cheap compared to normal policies. My daughters was about £350 (with Collingwood) for the year. They need to be cancelled as soon as the person passes, but you only pay pro-rata.

When they pass switch to a normal policy.

The learner driver policies normally give cover for a learner driving a parent's car. It seems, according to the OP, they won't do a learner policy to add the driver to a car that doesn't belong to the parents. In this case, the car belongs to the learner driver's sister.

My daughter's was her own car with no other policy in place. We simply went onto one of the comparison sites and put in her and her cars details, then took the cheapest quote.

They didn't insist on it being a parents car when I've used them. I've used it for both parent's & other vehicles. What they did insist on was that the vehicle owner/keeper had their own insurance policy covering the vehicle for when it wasn't being used by the learner.

Well that's just a standard policy for a provisional licence holder. What we're talking about here is insuring a learner driver to drive someone else's car.

Earlier in the year our 19 year old daughter was RK and policy holder for a Fiat 500, with a provisional licence, and her 17 year old sister was a named driver on the same policy, also with a provisional licence. We (dad and mum) were named drivers too. All with Go Girl.

There was a bit of additional premium to pay when they each acquired their full licences. Pretty straightforward (and no black box).

Thanks all

Will be calling the broker tomorrow as it appears what I need is possible. If that means a move from marmalade then so be it.

Thanks again.
