Chaps, having bought a 440i I’m contemplating making the switch from diesel to petrol for the family wagon also and prefer the look of the F11 to the newer 5.

Do any of you have experience of the 535i in the 5? I’d appreciate your thoughts on running costs, reliability and if its power characteristics suit such a heavy car.

Not exactly the comparison that you are asking for but have gone from a 335D (F31) to 540i (G31). The petrol is extremely smooth and deceptively fast but hand on heart a torquey diesel may suit a heavy estate better, as that low and midrange punch is something that is “missing” in the petrol, while thriving on revs.

I am perfectly happy with the switch, appreciate the petrol inherent smoothness and quietness, but you also pay 20-30 % more in fuel economy for this.

Not the same engine but I've got the nasp 3.0 petrol six pot in mine and its a very good match. Good pace too if you are willing to rev it. Some say that doesn't go with the f10 chassis or type of car or what not but I say thats bks. Suits the car very well IMO. Each 't own tho.

Amazes me considering the size of the f10 how well it can be chucked about.

Thanks guys. Yes I had the 440 remapped by DMS and in truth it didn’t really warrant it as the immense poke overshadows everything else.

The F11 would be the family wagon and my my wife is unlikely to be getting to the redline with two little uns in the back.

I recently bought a late high spec F11 535i as I preferred the look and interior to the newer G31 model. Great car, loads of room and plenty quick enough. My advice would be to go for VDC or Adaptive drive as they ride so much better than when on standard suspension.

May I ask what the difference is in variable damping (assume same as adaptive, which 440 has) and Adapted Drive?

Just what it says on the tin really, Variable Damper Control. Have been using mine in Comfort + for the past couple of weeks and it's night and day over the Normal & Sport settings. Great around our pothole ridden towns...

Variable damping is literally the change in shock absorber characteristics to give either a soft ride or a sporty one.
Adaptive Drive includes active anti roll bars as well as dampers. It also varies the power steering assistance to match real time driving.

Adaptive sounds more interesting but I’ve yet to see one with this option. Thanks for the info!

So many choices really for petrol estates.

I have a 435i, and have had the touring 335i as a f31 model... lovely engine, great car.

We flirted with a 535i touring, its a great car but hard to find one with great spec in the colour you want with the interior you want though. We did but it turned up without a service history and half the car had been repainted... was from a main dealer as well.

In the end we moved to newer cars. I really wanted the 540i but it was just too much money so we actually ended up with a Skoda Octavia VRS petrol, which surprisingly is pretty fun to drive and has loads more boot space that the 535i. It loses on the comfort factor but not by a huge margin its a newer car so has things like apple car play as standard, goes very well and returns over 30MPG for a 245bhp petrol version.

If you need bigger id go the Superb in the 280BHP 4x4 petrol version with adaptive suspension!!!
