Purchased a new Vehicle - Private Reg

Hi all,

I currently have a private registration on my present vehicle. I have part-exchanged it for a new car. The dealer is saying that I should put the private reg into retention and reassign when I get my new car.

Surely I could give my registration certificate for them to apply it to the new vehicle and save myself £80?

No, you need to pay the £80 fee regardless of whether it is transferred or retained.

Obviously you only pay the £80 once. Which is when you put the reg on retention. Assignment is 'free' and you can do it on line.
