Why isn’t it a hell of a lot cheaper on the web?

Online shopping. I know it’s popular and the blame for many high street stores demise is laid at its door.
I know the return rate of some goods is high but still, no high street presence, lower staff numbers, often customer service is contracted out.
Yet the cost of goods online really isn’t much less than buying from a shop.
I know there are contrary examples but I don’t think online shopping is all that cheap.
Are the onliners making a huge profit as there costs are lower or am I missing something?

With the reduction in the number of physical shops, competition and comparison reduces and hence the overall cost of goods increases, along with the profits of the online retailer. A lot of the high street shops have bought their prices down to a competitive level and then looked at making more money on after sales and upselling.
Jessops for example, cameras at the same price as online (give or take), but lenses and accessories (memory cards etc) double sometimes triple the cost.
Car dealers have done the same, there's little/no profit on the car itself, it's the warranties, the finance deals and paint protection, etc that make the money.
