I’ve noticed a few indications that considerable riches are now almost a PH requirement.
For example, a £5,000,000 lottery win.
“£5m win for me I couldn’t afford to quit my job. £2.5m on a decent 4-5 bed house, £1m to family, an f12, upgrade my Smart to a Brabus, few Carbon bits for the r8, facelift lights for the Evoque, £1m on a couple of buy to lets nearby, then back to work. No one aged 40 is retiring on that these days I’d say. if we put the 2 kids in private school we’d probably still be worse off than now apart from the f
k off house and car.”

No need to spend half of that amount on a house. Spend £1m, maybe a little bit more, but certainly not £2.5m.
I'd buy a couple of cars, but none would be silly money, no more than £100k worth.
I think if you live London, obviously things change, but for the rest of us it's easily doable.

PH is the Mecca for alpha types to display their dominance. Bravado is the name of the game and belittling peasants to demonstrate the social status is the key.
It’s all nonsense obviously but some folk seem to thrive off being a total moron. It’s amusing to see, sometimes.
If what we read on PH to be gospel, £5m is simply a yearly budget cap for the household running costs. Just doesn’t cut it.
I however could quite easily trot off into the sunset with that kind of money, i’d still visit PH just to catch up on how poor I am in comparison.

When the UK National Lottery started in 1994 the major topic requiring careful discussion in the tearoom at work was just how much one would need to win to stop work and lead a comfortable life, nothing extravagant though. £800,000 was the figure we finally agreed on. That figure would be double now, according to the internet. I'm guessing £1.6m would still do it today.

Impossible. I look up to everyone here. I imagine them living perfect lives in their perfect executive new build luxury apartments with their pointy shoes and tight, reflective suits. Nothing you write will convince me otherwise.
As for the original question if I had children, addictions, ex wives and assholes I wanted to 'compete' with then maybe 5 mil wouldn't be enough either. Since I have none of those things half'll do but it would provide a nice standard of living rather than a properly luxurious one if I wanted to draw it out for the rest of time. Inflation is the thing that haunts and I can't see it getting any better.

Depends if the assumption is that your winnings are all you have and there's no further income.Invest £800K wisely (or much less) and I'm sure it's quite possible to have a comfortable life albeit not an extravagant one.
