so daughter has had a chromebook for christmas. shes 9 in a month.

I've installed the google family link and enabled filtering on our sky broadband.

what else can I / should I do to strip errant images etc popping up in google etc.

yes I know education not filtering is the answer. no im not interested i trolls saying she shouldn't have a laptop or you shouldn't restrict it etc.

is there any more / better software I should install / is there a dns style service etc or should it be ok with what ive got?

thanks

OpenDNS Family Shield or Home might be worth looking into if you want some more control over accessing specific website types, both are free.

Make Firefox the default browser, install UBlock Origin which is a good ad blocker.

As otherwise at 9 she will be an easy target for as companies

Perhaps also ban the laptop being used outside living room/kitchen areas too, so you can supervise

How do you recommend the OP installs Firefox on a Chromebook?

Well you can technically install any android or Linux browser you choose, but that's going well beyond what's appropriate for a kid's machine.

Do kid's accounts actually receive ads? What's listed in the T&C's of the Family Link service?
My gut instinct would be to prevent installation of browser extensions on kids accounts so as they don't install a nasty extension.
Have you tried playing around whilst signed into the account, to try and identify weaknesses yourself?
There's bound to be a sub reddit on this stuff if you don't get what you need here.

If it supports Android or Linux apps that is, shame my Chromebase doesn't or else I'd have Brave on that as well.

Yes, but in this instance it's a newly purchased machine, so it'll likely do both. Definitely the Play Store anyway. But obviously beyond the remit of what's good for a kid's device.

Hi,

so we have family link installed but ideally i would like to see what web sites she goes on and for how long. There are websites she is supposed to use for school for so long a day and then there are the game ones she likes...

is there any cheap way of doing this? preferably set a time limit of 1 hour on one site one on another?

thanks

it could be installed as an Android app I suppose.

No idea what it's features are but running it as an android app is unlikely to have any affect outside of the sandbox the android apps run in.

You could try. Android networking apps such as VPN's are allowed control over the entire network traffic of a Chromebook if you so choose. This I'd imagine to be similar.

Just did a quick Google search. There's a number of available options apparently.
