Hi,

I was almost going to go through with a sale for a 2012 A5 S-Line1.8T (the facelift model) however when I went up and viewed the car, it was cranking but it did not turn over. The seller mentioned that the battery was low which could be preventing the car firing up. After trying to jump the car however with another van (running) and also a booster it still didn't start after 15 minutes.

I left eventually after 20 minutes as the car couldn't be started as it just kept cranking. The seller mentioned the battery just needed to be trickle charged for a few hours for the car to start again as it was showing as 30% on the MMI. I received a text later on to say the car had started however I am not too sure if the low charge was the issue or whether there is another intermittent issue... Usually if it has a low battery a jump start or battery booster should get the car started in less than a minute, and if it was too low, the car wouldn't crank full stop as a safety measure?

Do these cars stop you firing them up if the battery is below 30%? I'm in two minds about weather to go for the car still or leave it.

Cheers.

Is this normal for modern Audi's to crank but not fire up if the battery is below a certain percentage?

I have no idea. hehe I doubt whether it's battery related though if it turns and doesn't fire. Maybe someone else more knowledgeable can answer that.

However, everything you have told me means you should maybe look for another one. It can't be the only one for sale?

Walk away, you sometimes find they will spin over but not start if the timing is out, the chains stretch on the TFSi putting the timing out.

Yep it’s a walk away car.

Mine would fire up fine if slightly slower than normal with battery at 50% - 2011 2.0TFSI

IF, A BIG IF it’s perfect for you, someone with VAGCOM can check for timing belt stretch - details via google

But personally I reckon you need to look again
