Can I use a pigtail to plug it into a USB port on the PC, and plug in two devices, the printer and the gizmo for the wi-fe stick for the mouse?

Or is it one device per USB on the PC?

What's a pigtail?

I wouldn't plug a mouse transponder into a USB hub, if that what you mean.

How are you short of USB ports in 2020?

Look up "USB hub" on ebay.

A pigtail is a short lead with two units like a “Y” piece, different term.

I currently have the gizmo for the mouse in the front of the PC, taking up a USB port, only because the original mouse which came with the keyboard and both were wi-fi died, their transponder plugs in at the back of the PC out of the way.

Basically can you have two different items using one USB port? The fact you can get USB hubs would indicate you can, but thought to check.

I am sure some PC’s have lots of ports, but my PC is quite old now.

No, you can't, unless you add a hub. Just a y-cable won't work, the same way as it wouldn't work on a serial port. You might find a y-cable, but it'll just have a hub inside it.

Why? It makes no difference whether a hub is used or not.

If you look at modern laptops and tablets, they often have only a single USB port. I have two PCs, one in the house, one in my workshop, both are installed out of the way with a USB cable run to the desk and a hub there rather than running one cable per USB port.

So there's two circumstances where multiple devices are plugged into a single USB Port. In 2020.
