Dealer sitting on V5 after sale

I bought a couple of cars from dealers at the end of November. The new V5 for one arrived within days, but the new V5 for the other has still not arrived.
Before Christmas I called the dealer and asked what was going on. They gave me some very stupid story about not doing them online unless the buyer specifically requesting it and instead sending off the V5's in batches every week or so. This was never mentioned to me at purchase (they claim it was) and I don't understand what benefit they would have in not doing it online (like everyone else) and holding on. The only thing I can think of is to save logistical problems if the car is rejected within short period after sale.
The DVLA suggest I should wait 6 weeks before applying for a V5 using the green slip (which I have), but if there is something fishy going on, I would prefer to get this sorted asap.
Any experience of this happening?

It never fails to surprise me how many people I come across, including some who work in dealerships, who don’t understand/know about the online system and how much easier it makes transferring vehicle ownership.
I do a bit of work for a used dealership who sell primarily ex-lease cars and they do it in the way you have described, posting v5s off every week or so for sold cars.

I can understand that, but when I called them to challenge them, they told me that had I requested it, they would have done it online. I bought a car at auction early last year. When I paid for it I was told that the V5 would follow in 4 weeks.
I knew Lady B wasn't going to wait that long before getting her plate on. I drove home, hopped online and using the green slip did the owner transfer. A bit naughty perhaps but keeping Lady B happy was more important
