Renault starting 2020 as deluded as 2019?

What a joke article!!
1) "Not content with midfield supremacy" You were not supreme, you were beaten soundly by McLaren, using your own engine...*
2) Do not celebrate the podium of your customer team. That race was a complete freak occurrence and you still got beaten by McLaren...
The mind boggles at why Renault put out such comments, and why F1.com bothered to repeat them - maybe they wanted to amuse people?? It's rare for a team delivering the worst PU to also hit gold and get beaten dynamically by their own customer, but Renault have achieved just that. Perhaps solve the problems first and then discuss your plans for F1 domination
Nonsense. Talk of ramping up in 2020 from the guy that in 2018 said he was ramping up for 2019 - they went backwards. He also said in 2018 they were on track with their 'programme' to continue their ascendancy in 2019. And now apparently their entire programme has always been about 2021!? I'm sure the sponsors, investors and politicians controlling the public spend won't fail to notice the lack of consistency in these comments.

- *and if they're claiming midfield supremacy due to joint points between them and their customer teams, that's just pathetic logic.

It’s 2021, when the new era of F1 dawns and teams wrestle with the new regulations, when Abiteboul reckons Renault could take on the top three teams: Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull.
“That will be the next difficulty and still the target for us," he added. "It’s a target for 2021. Everything in our programme has been built around that long-term target of 2021 because, in accordance to our strategy, that’s really the first opportunity to make that happen.
It just won't be, stop being daft. The three teams mentioned all have a massively better funded run up to 2021. The chances of Renault being a top team in the first year of the new era...!? Umm, no.“That will be the next difficulty and still the target for us," he added. "It’s a target for 2021. Deep breath - it's just a press release by the PR team . I dare say Danny Ric might also find it a tad economical with the actualite . But it's not team 'delusion ' it's just PR . Every team spouts this stuff , it's more a part of the game now that we can't have winter testing and its passing acquaintance with actual pace . That was fun too
Enjoy it - it's part of the great game. You;d have to find something else to get aerated about if it wasn't .

I was under the impression that Renault had always said that they were aiming to continuously build the team and close the gap to the other works teams so they could be competitive after the 2021 rules changes? Sure they've had interim goals along the way, most of which they haven't met, but you don't get anywhere by setting low goals.
Optimism seems a very odd thing to criticise them for, even if it's slightly delusional optimism at times. I do feel that 2020 is a make or break year for them though. I suspect if they can't get significantly closer to the top three this year, they wont be in F1 in 2021.

How much longer can Cyril maintain his current position? The obstinate 'tough guy' act will surely only work for so long in the absence of any convincing increase in performance. Renault under Cyril are beginning to remind me of Arrivabene era Ferrari- a smoke screen occasionally punctuated by a bullish statement about how the team will perform in the future.
Oh come on folks... There is a difference between positive and optimistic PR and outright fantasy.
Saying they want better than midfield supremecy when they haven't been supreme at all is just silly. As is naming the top three teams as targets for battle when they haven't yet been able to beat their direct competition.
Good, believable PR has to be rooted in reality, with a little polish and flamboyance in places, and end on an optimistic but conceivable target for the future.
No one involved in backing the Renault F1 effort is going to be fooled by anything in this press release. It's more likely to instill doubt than confidence in their targets as the very basis of how they present their current performance is just nonsense. Midfield supremecy... Yea... Ok.

Exactly. And the more laughable the results the more sensational and excessive the claims for the future become in order to compensate for the reality. Eventually that leads to a tipping point at which the claims are so detached from reality that people start to question the sanity or honesty of those making them.Midfield supremecy can only mean you have beaten everyone else in the midfield, they clearly haven't. It's as if they want to spin the fact McLaren beat them as a positive because McLaren used a Renault engine to do it... That's just another negative really.

Everyone has jumped to the conclusion that Renault saying they "won't be content with midfield supremacy" means that they believe they currently occupy the position of 'midfield supremacy'- and I don't know why.
If everyone who reads a press release jumps to the wrong conclusion, then it is, as stated a bad press release. If they did mean it that way it's also a bad press release.Either way it's sensationalism beyond reality.

Secondly why are you now calling this a 'press release'?
What I see is a comment made by Cyril in an interview last season being dressed up as something it isn't in order to fill the void in public attention that Formula 1 feels during the off-season.

Because they didn't read it or failed to understand the nuance.[quote=TheDeuce]
1) "Not content with midfield supremacy" You were not supreme, you were beaten soundly by McLaren, using your own engine...[quote]
Only if you assume they are talking about 2019 rather than the future. To me it reads that they are saying they won't be satisfied with becoming the best of the midfield.

That’s exactly how it reads and what they are saying. Only if you assume they are talking about 2019 rather than the future. To me it reads that they are saying they won't be satisfied with becoming the best of the midfield.
Even Cyril knows where they were last year.
I put it down to Deuce being up late.

Seeeing as no 2020 cars have been unveiled yet or tested ,who's to say Renault haven't had a revolution
and designed the best thing since the Brabham fan car ?
Two revelations surely? They would need to get their PU as reliable as those used by the top teams and also massively improve their car design, so it doesn't get beaten by a customer team again.and designed the best thing since the Brabham fan car ?
It's possible that through some well timed and barely believable innovative thinking, beyond what is achieved by others with far more resource is technically possible. In my view that level of progress in both areas is so unlikely that it doesn't justify the comments made by Abiteboul. Talk of going above and beyond best of midfield (however he meant it) when your not yet managing best of midfield performance is just arrogant. Justifiable positivity and a realistic target would at most be to re-take the midfield lead from McLaren this season and do better than they did in 2018. Talk of anything beyond that is pointless - not because I don't believe that positivity is important, but because I also believe reality and credibility is as important. His comments vastly exceed reality.
I think you ought to thank the Renault team for giving you a platform to enjoy the self righteous indignation you clearly crave.
It's a bit of press office fluff , a bit of the self aggrandisment which has always run through motorsport - why get so bloody upset about it ? It's neither unusual nor important - it really isn't - or are you expecting a personal apology from the team for your distress ?
