a BMW beat a Ferrari????
Discussion
i read the comparison in Autocar last night between the F430 and the M5 and i think they've gone mad!
since when did a saloon become a "rival" for a Ferrari? the cars are completely different so there is no way they can be in the same league.
i can appreciate the M5 it is a great car but i'd have the F430 every time.
even if i couldn't afford the ferrari and had enough for an M5 i would buy a nice F355 instead.
what do you think of this?

I've been in a few Ferraris and the sense of occasion is just miles and miles better than a BMW. The BMW might be a great car, but for sheer enjoyment, Ferrari every time surely.
Is anyone else getting a bit bored with Autocar? They just seem to either make up some wacky photoshop and call it an exclusive or they come up with headline stories such as BMW beats Ferrari...

At the end of the day the M5 is just a souped up exec saloon and the 430 is a thoroughbred, purpose built, sports car. No performance figures can ever change that fact.
"Souped up exec saloon"?? Ah come on! This car is a completely re-engineered 5 series. V10, 500 BHP, 7 speed sequential box......."souped up" isn't doing this great car justice.

I drove a 360, a murcielago, 911 turbo and a merk slk at thruxton. The most disappointing was the ferrari, I cannot undertsand that fuss about them, I expected to be mightly impressed and wasnt, the emporers new clothes I thought.
Ah... but they make you stick in high gears and not really rev it as Enzo intended! I thought the same (although I have a vid which includes a sideways moment in their 360 and a bollocking from the instructor

You couldnt rev the cars too high (but still have lots of fun), but could still travel at high speeds (high enough for me anyway), overtake etc. Guess I just expected a lot more, I also was a bit diappointed with the interior - funnily enough the one thing I remember if the handbrake which looked so out of place, like it was out of a family saloon, black and plastic.
The last parts of the rev range make Ferrari's come alive (certainly the V8s). Seriously.
That said, I know what you mean about the interior of the 360. Not particularly a fan myself
The 360CS is something else again though. And the F430 looks like a pretty substantial improvement over the 360 too.

In all honesty, considering the other cars you drove, I'm not surprised. The 911TT is one of the finest sports cars ever. The lambo is just a beast.
I've been in a 360, whilst impressed, it didn't seem to do anything my plain old 996 C2 couldn't. Though I have to say, the 360 is one of the nicest looking cars ever IMO.

Have to agree, it is one of the nicest looking cars, but I expected to be 'hooked' when driving the ferrari, and just wasnt, the 911 turbo was awesome, so much power from so few revs. That was the car that really impressed for the price.
...and there's the rub....torque.....I've owned a bunch of Porsches and am now on my first (and not my last) Ferrari. All of my Porsches had torque - whist it was nice to wring them out to the red line for that sound, it wasn't strictly necessary. The last 700 rpm of the rev range in my 308 is sensational - the car just takes off.
If you were restricted on revs at that circuit, you were never going to experience that feeling that revving a Ferrari out to max gives - the fact that you even had time to check out the handbrake makes that abundantly clear!
The 911 turbo, be it in 993 or 996 guise, is such an approachable car, easy to drive, easy to attain high speeds in and a truly sensible choice that would disappoint no-one and impress anyone.
For me, the whole process of driving a Murci would impress me, even at 5mph - the sheer physical size, the view out of the cockpit and the weight of the controls would form my opinion of the car before I even drove it. Ergo I'm not sure whetheer I coud provide an objective viewpoint on the comparitive track behavour of this car versus the others.

As impressive as the 911tt is, go drive a GT3, it will blow your mind.
I drove both back to back. I loved the turbo, it was awesome, but the GT3 was just that little more special. Slightly less grunt, but in every other department, it was flawless, the most complete driving experience I've ever had.
