I am looking to get a V8 and i am looking for something reliable but not necessarily economical....
I currently have a MB SLK 171 350 which is great but i want to go to V8...
A Jaguar XK is topping the list at the moment but i wondered if there is anything else i should consider ?
Budget up to £15000
Only going to be doing 5000 miles a year max

I have a 5 series estate with the biggest engine they did without getting into m5 territory. So in this shape of 5 series that means a 4.5 litre v8 which changed to a 5 litre in 2005. Mine is a 2005 550i so it's not 500 road tax its just 300 or whatever - can't remember but I would object to paying 500. I think the engine is great - a real gem. They used this engine in the 7 series and x5 too. Mainly sold a lot in the states when petrol was cheap.
Mine has been pretty bullet proof in the 4 or 4.5 years I've had it. You can pick these up for about 4 or 5 grand or the most you will spend is 10. You dont have to go with the 5 series body if you prefer a coupe you can get the 650i instead and these are available in cab format too.
I like the estate because it's a do anything car. I even fit an American Fridge in the boot - just. With 370bhp it can surprise most other cars on the road and will never fail to entertain you. Yes it drinks a lot of petrol but it is quiet, refined and very civilised until you press the throttle and then it is still quiet and refined but shifts in an uncivilized way. My car was featured in a magazine article too. This is a pic of my copy.

If you want to stick with Merc but don’t fancy the AMG service and parts costs, look at the E500 - 4.7 V8 BiTurbo.
Mines a cabrio but coupes are out there. Pretty sensible running costs for what it is. 400 odd bhp but pretty cheap to map and extract noticeably more.
Will do 30 mpg easy on a run - will also do 15 mpg round town….
