Yep, another what car?

Hi all.

My current (great deal from last year) leased A class goes back in April. Was lucky again and bagged one of the 420i GC deals recently to replace it.

A new job role sees me going from 8 to 12k-ish miles a year now so am struggling to justify to myself to stick with that and pay for the extra miles. It'll go up from £256 to £290 pm, affordable but like I said I can't really justify it.

I have a cracking little Carina II shed for knocking about in but (think) I'd like the benefit of a new car for work purposes, budget is pretty firm at around £250 pm with up to about £1.5k deposit for a lease.....or do I buy something for about £5k from savings? If going that route that's pretty much all I want to spend so no budget creep there.

Would like to be in something Focus/Golf sized ideally, petrol, ok on fuel consumption, performance not so much of a priority over comfort and a decent spec.

FML, first world problems, etc.

Any helpful insights or suggestions?

Just pay the extra it'll work out cheaper, if that 5k car needs a clutch or cambelt doing you'll be spending more than you would do with the £34 a month extra.

Is that £296 through paying excess mileage or by renegotiating the up front mileage?

Alternative view is that at the end of the period, you'd still have a car if you bought one.

The only way it's comparable is if you plan for your £5k car to be scrapped at the end of the comparative lease

Yes but this way the 5k is still sitting in his bank & he's only paying an extra £34 & he makes full use of the deposit he won't get back from his current lease.

It'll earn nothing sitting in the bank, and the "extra £34" is on top of £250 over two years (£6000), plus £1500 deposit.

So over two years, the lease car will cost £7500 plus any additionals that aren't included (least of all, damage).

A £5k car over two years is, usually at the very least, going to be worth £3k, so even if you were unlucky enough to spend £2k maintaining it (which would only be likely with a bad choice), you'd still be £3500+ better off (as a minimum) before you add on the additional £34 and any potential RFL savings.

It's a quote for 12k miles not excess mileage (which is slightly more). I've just checked the email and it's actually £281.81 pm, deposit £845.42, £180 fee which I've already paid.

So the difference is £25 pm for 4k extra.....hmmm....

I don't understand the bit about the deposit I won't get back from my current lease, it's never returned. It was 1+11 £211 pm btw

The lease seems like a decent deal to me. I’d stick with it as the last thing you want in a new role is looking like a cheapskate and/or missing stuff because your shed keeps breaking down. As you say, affordability isn’t an issue.

It is a decent deal for that car, was a bit spoiled with the A class deal...but £70 pm more, need to have a word with myself

A Class is equivalent to 1 series, a 4 series is likely to be more expensive, bigger, better.
