Hello!

Still trying to find a decent cheap MK5 Golf that's quickish, and hasn't been Barried.

Question 1:

There seem to be a bazillion 1.4 petrol versions, and lots of adverts that don't specify which one is in the car that's for sale. How can you identify the version? I'm interested in the 170bhp version, but badge-wise, this doesn't appear to be anywhere on any of the cars. There is (I think) one 1.4 N/A, and three 1.4 TSI versions? 120, 140 and 170 bhp (ish)?

Question 2:

The main reason for my interest is that the 1.4tsi (assuming I can actually idenfiy one!) seems to be less of a target for 'improvement' than the GTI by young Bozza, Dazzo and chums from the estate at the edge of town. I don't want an 'improved' car, please thank you.

Is the 1.4tsi anywhere near as reliable as the TFSI GTI? I understand the TFSI is fairly okish in terms of reliability...

Any clues would be amazing!

No.

They'll likely want a timing chain at some point and a lot had piston issues too. Water pumps are a faff to change and jobs that are easy on other cars are not on those thanks to the complexity of the twin-charged motor and complex plumbing/wiring.

Source: We have one (a very late GT Sport), it's nice, my wife and I both like driving it. I've already paid for the expensive stuff and we're keeping it now.

Get a decent GTI and invest some time/money into reversing mods you don't like and getting condition up to scratch. You might even get a bit of that investment back at resale (if you then have a clean, standard car) where with a 1.4 you unlikely will.

If you are serious about buying a Mk5 GT170TSI, and Lincolnshire is not too far away, then send me a PM. Mine is a one owner (me) 2007 and has done over 250,000 miles!!! It had its second new timing chain fitted recently and has wanted for nothing. Unmodified other than DAB radio and blue tooth hands free phone. Only ever been run on super unleaded and has reliably taken me all over the UK and Europe. Currently running on winter wheels/tyres, but also has summer wheels with virtually brand new premium tyres. It is probably the best car I have ever owned, and recently covered 1,000 miles over Christmas when my son and his family borrowed it while they were in the UK.

Yes, potentially interested depending on price obviously. I'm also in Lincolnshire! I cant send you a pm for some reason. The 'send' button is impossible to hit! Odd. What sort of money?

£1,000. I have spent more than this over the last 12 months replacing the timing chain, fitting a new radiator, new alternator and 4 new tyres. I will try to send you a PM tomorrow.
