Hi,

My warranty on a r1200rs is about to end and I am considering the BMW insured warranty. In theory this looks expensive, monthly cost (includes breakdown) and then an excess if you ever do claim.

The bike is a daily, all year round workhorse so I can not afford to be off the road. The bike has been faultless in its 23 months and 11k miles but I have worries about the cost of fixing any shaft / drive problems.

Lots of stories online about horror, costly fixes on this engine but I guess there must by hundreds of bikes that operate just fine we’ll into galactic mileage. I presume the warranty would also tie me into the BMW dealer for all servicing which is another expensive add on (I know legally you can use any VAT garage but in reality I am sure anything outside BMW will create some friction with the claim).

Does anyone have any experience of actually claiming on these warranties?

Other options I am thinking:

New BMW (warranty is now 36 months)
Nearly new other bike (probably a 900 GT TRACER)
Zero SRF (lotto win pending)

I had an engine rebuild with zero quibbles from the warranty & apart from that enjoyed peace of mind touring Europe with the included Euro recovery.
If I bought another BMW I'd get the extended warranty personally.

Never had to claim on my BMW extended warranty but still think it was money well spent.
