Looking at the above and wanted some advice. Haven't viewed any yet but lots seem to have very high mileage. We're tempted by the SE spec rather than M Sport due to tyre cost and comfort but I'd just like an idea of what goes wrong. Almost certainly looking at a 2010 model so facelift with revised I drive etc. Coming from an S Max....

Also interested as I've just bought a late 13 plate 40d.

I put 160k on my (2012) 4.0d.

No issues. Tyres were circa every 25k. It lived on the motorway though.

If your going to use it round town, budget for a dpf, they can clog quiet quickly in urban use.

Ensure fitting BMW star rated tyres if bigger wheels are fitted on the rear. Otherwise transfer box damage can occur.

We have had a 2007 SE version and now have a 2011 M Sport 40d version. I think you're right to seek a facelift version as the little things such as the new iDrive do make a difference.

With both cars we haven't had many issues. The current one is nearing 93k and we've owned it since 55k, the only thing that we have had trouble with is one of the glow plugs not working correctly and needed to be replaced, this was covered by the AUC warranty.

Our current car has comfort seats, its an option well worth seeking if you can! I will be selling ours in the coming weeks, I fancy giving a Q7 a go next. If you have any specific questions about ownership please feel free to ask

BMW dpfs never need replacing. Just fix the cause of the blockage and unblock.

Thank you. Please send across details via PM.

To be honest my wife really likes them, I'm the one a bit nervous as I had an older BMW diesel in the past that I hated but also had an E46 which I loved and miss to this day.

All done.

In fact both the X5s we have had have been my wife's cars, she really likes them and likes the elevated driving position. The 40d can properly shift too. Great cars if you have kids too, as you can take a lot of stuff in it, with four bikes on the roof :-)

We have an X5 40d. Excellent family car. Even better without stupid big wheels, 18s are the way to go. Improves the ride massively, also cuts tyre costs in half. Which is relevant as these cars eat tyres.

T’riffic motors.

Had a 48i for sometime before moving it on last year and it was an epic vehicle.

Don’t be put off by air springs. If the bags (air springs, sorry) are leaking air they’re actually easy to replace, but I’d recommend spending a bit more on ones from Arnott which can be found for a ton or thereabouts.

If you do go to view any and they’ve had the engine on prior to your arrival this would suggest to me they may be doing so in order to lift the car to the desired ride height (compressor kicks in once car is turned on) following some sagging. Just something to bear in mind but relatively easy to diagnose as a leaking bag with some water spray and Fairy - videos online smile
