No V5 - Driveway trader - options?

Looking at new car for son No 1. Car listed here: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2014-ALFA-ROMEO-MITO-DI...
After a bit of detective work, it's clear the seller buys a few cars a year and then punts them on so is the classic driveway trader. I'm OK with that and he has confirmed as much (he was very honest). The car is priced behind book, is HPI clear but has no V5 and I am wary for obvious reasons.
Is the V5 application process straightforward; do I pay him first and then we apply for the new logbook and then I drive away? Never been in this situation so appreciate advice - including 'run far away, now' comments.

Why doesnt he apply for the V5 ?
I just got a car for the Son from my sister who had lost the V5.
Fairly simple process, fill in the forms, and pay the fee. They investigate as its a change of keeper as well as a replacement V5 so its more complex and takes up to 6 weeks
However, they included a letter about the lack of tax for the last 12 months and would be passing the details to the enforcement division. Now we have had nothing back, and neither has my sister, but it shows you could be opening yourself up to some complications.
Especially if its stolen
No need to run away and no issue at all with buying it.
As you’ve already stated it’s HPI clear, so no issue there.
No trader is ever going to apply for a new V5 themselves as it slows down the process at both ends, plus it would add an additional keeper on the V5 unnecessarily.
Go and view the car and go armed with a V62 form if you want to tax the car straightaway. If you’re happy and want to buy it, take the V62 to the nearest Post Office (preferably a decent sized one as not all Post Office staff will have the prior knowledge of this process) and they’ll send off the V62 for you and on that basis would be able to tax if for you at the same time.
Just also make sure you get a receipt with date of purchase from the seller.

They normally have the V5 or the new keepers supplement though ?Why is the V5 missing. Does he have the original owners details ?
There are so many cars out there. Somethings not right. Why would you want to sell a car with a missing V5 given the suspicion it will raise and the subsequent problems it might raise.
I suppose he doesnt want lots of cars registered to his address to stop being identified as a trader, but I would walk, too many options out there.
Lots of good points and the lack of V5 isn't an immediate no no but there's all sorts of logistics to take into account (car is 70 miles away, can only view on weekends - but not today, making the whole V5/V62 process a little more complicated).
On balance, I'll leave it, but agree it looks nice and well priced - which is nice

Some advice on here.

The logbook loan does seem to be a significant risk, but I imagine it would be solvable.
I believe the HPi check can be done against the VIN as well ?

Driveway trader hasn't filled out yellow section of v5 as they are not a real trader.
Driveway trader hasn't filled out green section as they don't want to add a owner.
Driveway trader has bought a car which has a logbook loan on it and is playing silly
Driveway trader doesn't want you to find out the car has been stolen/written off and you have nothing to refer too vin wise (apart from hpi check i guess)
Pick a option you think is most appropriate and that's probably what it is.. it is priced high for a private sale, and with a driveway trader it will blood out of a stone should you have a problem with the car, so I would personally move on from the car.

If you think that absence of a V5 makes it more likely that there is a log book loan outstanding on the car then consider this:https://motorway.co.uk/guides/how-to-sell-a-car-wi...

Imagine I'm short of money ( might not need much imagination
) and a take out a "log book loan" and send them my V5 as they request. Imagine then that I decide to sell the car anyway so I send off £25 to DVLA who, since there are no changes to the keeper, cheerily and swiftly dispatch me a crisp new V5.I can then advertise and sell the car just like any other.
Maybe cautious, thorough and diligent PHers should ask to check the seller's bank statements to ensure that they havent received any money from logbook lenders?

Normally, yes, but these things do happen. As someone in the trade (not a big dealer, but a restorer and repairer who has sold a fair few cars along the way over the years and registered as such), the usual process is when you buy a vehicle, in the majority of cases you would expect to get the V5 and as a trader you’d transfer the vehicle to yourself via the yellow slip. In the old days I’d send that off to the DVLA, but nowadays it’s all online and instant. Then you’d keep the full V5 instead of sending it off as because you’re a trader, you don’t need to physically register the document in your name, it also means you can sell the vehicle immediately without any necessity to wait for paperwork. If you buy the vehicle from another trader or an auction etc, the vehicle should already be “in trade”, so you just take the V5 as it is and they can notify the DVLA.Why is the V5 missing. Does he have the original owners details ?
However, over the years there have been a handful of occasions where this hasn’t happened. The most recent one was I bought a car online from someone I know within the online car community. I fired him over some funds and got a third party transporter to collect it. He said he’d post the V5 to me, but it never turned up. Fortunately I asked him to give me the reference numbers from it so I did transfer it via the yellow slip, so I could get the DVLA to confirm that to any new owner anyway, but if I hadn’t done that it would have been the same situation. You could have also bought a vehicle of someone who can’t find the V5. Plenty or careless people out there lose their paperwork, don’t look after their service history etc and don’t apply for a new one.
It may be that if this guy is a part time trader who wants to hide it, he conveniently “loses” the V5s himself. That might be iffy in terms of the law, but if the car stacks up then it’s not the buyers concern really.
Same goes for buying every car, check everything out. If you’re happy with the car, buy it. If you’re not, don’t. The lack of a V5 wouldn’t be the be all and end all.

Would a log book loan not show on you though? If it's not on there, then there could be no recourse potentially...Imagine I'm short of money ( might not need much imagination

Has your hpi check defo covered finance?

I am pretty certain that you can't tax a car without either a V5, new keeper section or renewal document now. Its no longer possible to tax it with a V62.
