Need a way to turn off the engine?
Discussion
Hi,
I have a PGO Quadzilla 250cc Road legal buggy. It has a key which is either on or off with a push button start to start the engine which was fitted by the previous owner.
When i turn the key to off and remove the key the engine is still running. Even by disconnecting the battery it was still running!
I want to switch off the engine either by the key or by having a separate kill switch on the dash.
Any advice or tips how i can go about doing this?

The engine is probably a Kymco two stroke scooter engine.
If you can't get a workshop manual from PGO, then Kymco?
I suspect that your DPO has done something wrong in fitting the starter mechanism - was it originally kick start?
You need to get busy with a multimeter to find out why the ignition remains live when you turn off the main switch. Even PistonHeads contributors can't see what has been done to the vehicle.

It's a 4 stroke engine with no kick start. As standard it was supposed to turn on and off with just the key. But i believe previous owner had issues with this hence retrofitting a start button along side the key.
Hmmm i'm thinking i might be out of my depth here inthe electronics department
Oh this is the manual online

Alternator needs to be wired through the switch as well, not just battery, otherwise when it's turning it's powering up the ignition system etc. off the alternator regardless of if there is a battery connected or not!
interesting, so if you switch off the alternator at the key aswel, the engine will cut out immediately?Bobton125 said:

You can't switch off the alternator as the engine is turning it via whatever mechanical linkage is present. You need to break the power output from it (by wiring the output through the switch if it's rated for it) or remove power from the coil/CDI box/whatever is firing the plugs. I.e. either all the output of the electrical system needs to be removed from the ignition system at the same time or the ignition controller may well have an engine kill input on it which is grounded out by the off position of the original key to avoid this. What's happening at the moment is someone has wired battery positive through the switch so when you turn the key/switch on it all lights up and if you don't start it then it all turns off again, but if it's running and the alternator is providing charge then all the switch is doing is turning the battery connection off and the rest of the engine loom is staying powered off the alternator.
One of these would sort it

If you unplug the alternator output wires (it's probably a bike type three wire on this) and it turns off properly it's this!
