Help me please you gurus.

Laptop was corrupted so reloaded windows. I then downloaded (from my Microsoft account) the purchased MS Office 2016.

All seemed to be fine until I opened up some Excel spreadsheets to amend.

All I want to do is add up some columns & rows!

1) Method one: key =sum( then move the cursor up one cell, lock with decimal point and highlight cells. Decimal point doesn't lock the cell
2) Method two: simply key in the desired formula, e.g. =sum(e5.e45). This returns an error
3) Method three: use the autosum, works fine
4) Method four: Name the range I want to add up, key in =sum(rangename) works fine

What on earth is going on? I've tried repairing & still get the same result.

Any pointers will be most welcome. I've been using Excel for many years & never experienced this before!

Mods can now end this thread to save me any more embarrassment.

It's a funny old thing the noddle. The decimal point thing was in Lotus that I used about 100 years ago!

This is akin to forgetting your pin number at the cashpoint.

I retired from work two years ago...

....must be a classic example of use it or lose it!

Nonetheless, I am somewhat shocked, as in most places I worked I was the go to Excel expert!
