Hi guys

Long time lurker here but never really needed to make a post until now

I took delivery of a new vehicle Saturday and I'm absolutely gutted that I've scuffed one the front left diamond cut 19 inch rim. Not that it matters, but the damn council insist on putting these absurdly tight width restrictions on the roads in conjunction with RAISED curbs in my area and despite driving at less than 5mph to clear it it still managed to clip the front left one. It is infuriating.

This is the damage:

Given this is Diamond cut, I am thinking it is beyond repair as the cuts are fairly deep and on the face of the rim not just the edge? I'm guessing this will need a full strip and remachining or alternatively just get all four stripped and powder coated instead since diamond cut wheels are a pita to deal with anyway?

Not sure where you are based but I've had worse repaired by three sixty alloys in Reading.

Wheel repair shop can fix no issue.

Get it fixed asap as they’re prone to rusting once damaged like that!

Get some clear lacquer on it for the moment or even a bit of silver paint to keep it covered.

Clean it up and clear lacquer ASAP and you’ll get quite a while out of it before full repair needed.
Bit of a bummer though

I can’t help but I feel your pain.

I kerbed a 19 incher in the summer and I was gutted for weeks.

You have my sympathy.

Definitely repairable I’m sure OP but will most likely need taking to a repair place with premises rather than a mobile guy. I had worse damage than that to the diamond cut rim of a wheel after clipping a kerb at about 20mph and took it to a wheel repair place (‘Kerbed’ in West Sussex - highly recommended if you’re local) and they made it look good as new and colour matched to the other wheels perfectly. Think it was £120 and had to leave the car with them (in their secure workshop) for 2 days, or could have just left the wheel of course.

Ow! Sympathies. Diamond cut wheels really do fall into the category of ‘just because they can doesn’t mean they should’.

Living in London and having to park my family work horse on the street I’ve given up trying to keep my diamond cuts ding free. I’ll just get them spruced up before I sell.

Been there, done that.

As others have said clean area of debris and grease then put some clear lacquer in there to seal it against the road salt.

IF you do decide to repair it, swap it to the OSR wheel. as that's the least likely to be kerbed (again) as you can only cut them back until the raised lip is gone.

I left mine as once cleaned up, nobody noticed until pointed it out.

As a temporary repair, a bit of fine wet and dry (follow the direction of the cut if you can). Then a bit of AutoSol / metal polish. Then a good clean and a coat of lacquer… Will see you through for a while and will stop the corrosion.

Yes got two quotes, one for £95 the other for £120. Went with the higher price one as they work with a lot of high end cars/dealers and could store the car securely indoors whilst they had it (other place was a busy industrial estate with lots of passing lorries, vans etc and didn’t fancy it being left by side of road on axel stands). To be fair they did an excellent job and gave me a lift to and from the station which is a few miles away. 19” Porsche wheel for context.

£120 per wheel was roughly the quote I had from to return my R8 diamond cut alloys to new.

I think the diamond cut wheels look great (coating them looks crap IMHO) so OK to pay that.

Thanks all for the replies, much appreciated.

I have decided to get them powdercoated and have narrowed it down to a few firms:

CTC / Maldon ShotBlasting - seem very professional (and very expensive!). Total inc VAT is £411 to blast, clean, zinc prime, coat gunmetal grey, clear lacquer, remove, refit and rebalance. They're 2 hours drive away and will take 7 days to finish! They also offer a 5 year guarantee.

Diamond Alloys Northolt - seems to have good reviews on here and other places. They will take 2 days and have quoted £312 inc VAT They're about 20 minutes from me but i'll still need to leave the car with them.

Lepsons - mixed bag reviews with some real positives and some real shockers. Also quite expensive at £552 and will need to leave the car with them for 5 days. 2 hours drive.

Exel Wheels - again, bit of a mixed bag of reviews with some glowing and some damning. Also a bit expensive at £432 and needs 5 - 7 days. They cant' provide loan wheels as they don't have any in the size and type for my car.

The Wheel Specialist (Maidenhead) - can't find much on this particular branch but other branches seem to have great reviews. Same day service available and about 45 minutes drive away so this is definitely the most convenient.

Why is there such a variance between all of these which are all supposedly doing it "right"? Surely the process should be standardised so that any and all would take the same amount of time to do the job right no? Wheel specialist makes me a bit nervous that their turnaround is same day when everyone else is asking for 2-7 days.

threesixty alloys in reading or my alloys in basingstoke would both repair that so as you'd not know its been done. Why powder coat all 4 on such a new car and loose the dual colour finish - cost you 3x as much.

Well to be honest I don't like the diamond cut finish on the alloys - I don't think they look good on this car in white. I'd prefer they were all gloss black or gloss / matt dark grey so I was going to get them done anyway I just didn't expect to have to do it 3 days after taking delivery!

Ok so I went and visited a couple of providers today:

One of whom was The Wheel Specialist in Maidenhead. Off the bat I would say, TWS looked professional as an operation. Large, clean, compartmentalised workshop with dedicated sealed areas for finished wheels hanging off rails whereas Diamond Alloys just seemed to have wheels everywhere.

TWS were really patient and tried to help offer multiple example wheels to test colour/finish

Now onto a dilemma. I can't figure out what colour wheels would work best on this car. I've tried a number of options in the workshops and to me (and the guys in the workshop) we felt anthracite, gunmetal, smoked chrome and any other shade of grey just looked "wrong" on the car. After seeing it in person I tend to agree given that the roof is black, windows are black, body is white, trim is black and then all of a sudden you have grey wheels. Are they all right that the only colours that would work are either the stock diamond cut wheels or gloss black?

Gloss Black:

Anthracite

Gunmetal

Stock Diamond Cut

I have black wheels on myMini.
I wasn’t a fan of black wheels before but I think it ties in nicely with the roof , arches and mirror caps.
