Clergy furious as cross removed
Torbay Council is to review a decision to remove a 5ft high gilt cross from the chapel at the Bay's crematorium.
Church leaders in Torbay say they are appalled by the removal of the cross at the chapel which has been renamed a "ceremony hall".
Local vicar, the Rev Anthony Macey said he discovered the cross had gone when he turned up to conduct a funeral.
The council says the cross was removed as an attempt to cater for everyone in a "diverse multi-faith society".
But Mr Macey, vicar of Cockington and Chelston, said no other religions had complained about the cross.
He said: "It is political correctness gone mad. Fifty years after the crematorium opened, it seems absolutely stupid when most of the funerals are Christian.
"This kind of thing starts racial prejudice which I think is very sad."
Councillor Alan Faulkner said the removal of the cross was an attempt to "cater for everyone".
"Political correctness does not come into it," he said.
"We are talking about faith and you cannot be political as far as faith is concerned.
"Faith is an individual thing and we have to look after everyone."
But he added that he realised the council had offended people, and the decision would be reviewed.

My family live down there. It is quite a strange place, they're in the 1970s when it comes to multicultural/religious awareness.
My Mum comes from the SE and I was born in Sidcup, by a black doctor in 1968. Nothing unusual there then. We then moved up to sunny Scunthorpe for 18 years, lots of ethnic diversity again. Mum then moved down to Devon and got a job in Social Services (she's an OT). a few years ago (i.e. around 2000) they sent her on a 'Racial awareness course'. Of course Mum thought they were joking. They weren't. When she said 'black doctor' everyone in the room went through the roof. "oh, you can't say that, they're coloured" and crap like that. Mum walked out.
When looking to move house, she went to see a nice house which for some reason had been on the market for a while. As soon as she got there she knew why - it was owned by a Pakistani family. The locals wouldn't go near them (Mum says this family were perfectly normal, he was something medical). Bl00dy weird people down there I tell you.
My Stepdad is a loud Yorkshireman and works as a Chiropodist. He is very good and gets lot of old ladies with bad feet. Strangely, they are all fine about him (being an outsider) and his jokes (sometimes involving taking the pi55 out of his African brother (adopted by his parents up in Yorks in the 40s/50s). He says it is the people aged between teens and 40 that are odd.

Strange then that a councillor feels qualified to comment on the church.
If they're going to carry on with all this PC rubbish, where we can't put up St Georges flag, crosses are taken out of churches and we can't call black people black anymore, then I'd like to see Seikhs remove their turbans, Moslems shave off their beards and Jews remove their Star of Davids.
If we are going to be a multi-cultural country where no-one is to be offended, then let's bloody well do it properly and offend EVERYONE instead of discriminating against White English Christians!

Just been on the local news, the 'church' is not a church or a chapel, it has never been consecrated or dedicated to any religion.
It is just a place of remembrance, therefore I don't feel that having a cross on the side of it is representative of its purpose. Kinda like sticking a cross on a registry office.
