Hi all. Sadly as expected our wedge has failed her mot. Due mainly to Marie not being able to drive her for a while, due to breaking her thumb (selfish) and probably me not sorting out the advisories from the last mot may have played a small part. I have been sent a list of parts required . by the local garage.

1. rear brake pads
2. n/s rear brake caliper
3. front brake pads and discs
4. handbrake cable
5. front suspension upper ball joint dust covers .
.
The brake pads are readily available online...but not sure about the rest .The rear brakes are standard 1988 350i On the front we have the 4 pot Princess calipers ..but not sure if the discs would be standard ?Would the dust covers be Cortina? Any advice on what and where to buy most welcome.
Cheers
martin

Hi Martin

TVR Parts will probably have all the bits you need. Unless the handbrake cable has snapped you probably won't need one once the rear brakes have been sorted and adjusted properly. Mine failed on the handbrake cable, they thought it had stretched, quite a few years ago but once I sorted the rear brakes the handbrake worked perfectly.

I've just checked and TVR Parts do have all the items in stock including rear refurbished caliper. I wouldn't bother buying a new dust cover for the suspension bush. The joints are cheap and easy to replace so it's just as easy to fit a complete new one. As the handbrake mechanisms are independent from the main rear brake calipers the handbrake issue may not be fixed with a new caliper. I'd be tempted to bite the bullet and buy a new one anyway and get it swapped. Rear brakes on a Wedge are a real delight to work on....... NOT. I found it easier just to take the whole diff out.

Rear calipers are from an XJ6 so any big box store or on-line vendor should have them.

Just had a thought. Front pads advertised on TVR Parts will be for the standard calipers so not suitable for your 4 pots, however pads should be easy enough to acquire. Personally I'd d go for an upgrade. Mintex or Greenstuff.

For the front brakes do you have the separate AP Bells and Rotors (these were fitted from factory to the bigger wedges or is it a one piece disk? You may have some fun sourcing disks if it's the former. Cheers Steve

Are the front discs vented or solid?

Racetech Direct stock the hand brake cable if you need it. I'd probably just replace the ball joints, they are cheap as chips.

Strange that the front needs new discs. I have found wedges to be light on disc wear, even when I was getting through a set of front pads every 9 weeks on one particular commute (A414 round bottom of St Alban's).

Thanks again for the replies. All parts are now on order except front discs. The front brakes failed due to the near side performance excessively fluctuating . I think the discs are solid, will confirm tomorrow.

Front discs are from Mark 2 Ford Granada. The vented ones are off the 2.8 injection estate. Mk2 Granadas had rear drums!
