Title should say it wasn’t the Russians after all. Wasn’t became was!

Donny ran the best Facebook marketing campaign ever

So says this Facebook exec

“So was Facebook responsible for Donald Trump getting elected? I think the answer is yes, but not for the reasons anyone thinks. He didn’t get elected because of Russia or misinformation or Cambridge Analytica. He got elected because he ran the single best digital ad campaign I’ve ever seen from any advertiser. Period.

To be clear, I’m no fan of Trump. I donated the max to Hillary. After his election I wrote a post about Trump supporters that I’m told caused colleagues who had supported him to feel unsafe around me (I regret that post and deleted shortly after).

But Parscale and Trump just did unbelievable work. They weren’t running misinformation or hoaxes. They weren’t microtargeting or saying different things to different people. They just used the tools we had to show the right creative to each person. The use of custom audiences, video, ecommerce, and fresh creative remains the high water mark of digital ad campaigns in my opinion.”

Similar with Johnson’s general election campaign I expect

How did they influence the tens of millions who don't use social media, let alone idiot platforms such as Facebook?

I've no idea how old you are but does the concept of Chinese whispers and group think come as a surprise to you? It takes one "internet savvy" Granny to repeat what she read on the vast internet to her Bridge group, the bus driver who takes her into town, the owner of the corner shop and the teenager who is working the till at Oxfam to get her bronze Duke of Edinburgh award.

That's not including TV and Radio influences.

Robocalls, Fox News.

Hell, they're the easiest ones to manipulate as they deliberately isolate themselves from any possibly opposing point of view.

I think how far the Russians have been having a giggle is yet to be seen. The tools (and loot) have been provided and used on people that don't have a clue. The influence by a state can also be used on other states and orgs.

Johnson winning was part 2 and Cummings is well into this, this was up and running since Vote Leave and probably long before.

I expect a nice book or three with some decent investigation will spill the beans in the years to come.

They follow their money (and donate it to worthy causes), I thought Corbyn was more a Soviet Union supporter though the Scripol attack drew a stupid but typical response from him.

That cleverly ignores the Cambridge Analytica work, the transfer of voter details from the trump campaign to the russians via Manafort that allowed targetted advertising, the removal of voters from the voters register etrc.

but then of course none of it would be facebooks fault, and that facebook is an excellent tool - just look at how much money they made/are making from trumps campaign, which is why Zuckerberg keeps having meetings with trump.

I thought they had to get the ISC re formed but other commentators are saying they do not have to. I suppose when Cummings manages to redact the lot with his sharpie.

It was presented already redacted with the sign off from the relevant departments apart from No 10. They cannot alter it, only redact it. They must release it and they then answer to it. As I understand it.

Be interesting to see what is in it, a lot or sod all?

I was listening to a Radio 4 comedy programme recently and there was a Russian comedienne on who summed this up nicely:

The russians don't want to have anyone specific elected - They just want chaos

This - it has always been this.

I think it has reached the point where they will probably admit it (interference) sometime soon. There are a number of areas (such as eliminated expat dissidents) where there is not much effort put into covering their tracks.

Chinese whispers are fake news as they are lost in translation IE distorted.

What about the people that do not listen or watch TV? How About the people that do not talk about politics and just get on with life?

I had to google Robocalls, are they common in the SE?

Certainly not here in the SW, I have never had one. But reminds me I need to cancel the landline as we never use it. Not even for robocalls.
I feel I have missed out on something.

Fox news is like all MSM not to be trusted and the same goes for SM.

They all contain words the maybe could be might happen etc etc. So fake news. And twitter is just a feed of the same.

If it is fed to you it is fake and again this is my opinion which will anger lots of folk which is normal nowadays.

Because having a difference of opinion is wrong.

PS: I will not care about this post by the morning so have fun arguing amongst yourselves.

PPS: To be fair I never remember threads because I do not care, ignorance is bliss.

I would wait for the ban but I am going to watch a film.
