Murders Fall For First Time in Five Years
Discussion
Murders have fallen for the first time in five years.

It set me thinking. That's about 13 people a week killed across the country. What is the risk of a stranger - you or me - being killed tomorrow? How many of these murders are between gangs, or people known to each other?
I suggest that for the typical "man in the street" going about his legal business with his head down, his nose clean and his mouth shut, the statistical risk must be incredibly low.
Other for a terrorist attack, the UK must be an incredibly safe country?

It really works the opposite way . The police can benefit from having higher crime rates in that they can plead for more powers/resources etc to tackle them.
I would suggest that trumpeting good or better crime figures generally causes more problems for crime prevention agencies than saying things are getting worse.

PH, NP+E, the British media and I suspect a good portion of the Great British public provide a curious spectacle. The manslaughter and murder numbers fall by a not insignificant number, despite an unhealthy spike in London and the topic gathers dust and even the few comments that are posted contain a fair splattering of cynicism and scepticism.
Isn’t there some good news in this story somewhere? Fewer people are meeting untimely violent deaths turning a recent upward trend. No requirement to sit back and think “job done” but surely this is a better headline than “murder/manslaughter rates rise again”, no?

I wonder what the true murder rate is as lots of time people simply go missing (180k last year).
I saw a statistic that you were more likely to be killed in London via violence then in a traffic accident.
Can you quote that statistic properly?I saw a statistic that you were more likely to be killed in London via violence then in a traffic accident.
For example, source etc.
Road deaths in London 112 http://content.tfl.gov.uk/casualties-in-greater-lo...
Murders in London 149 (some of them maybe caused by vehicles deliberately crashing into people) https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-50925024

This is PH. Many PHers love to wallow in bad news and love to get angry. Good news genuinely upsets them because it leaves them floundering around looking for some angry aspect they can dredge up.Isn’t there some good news in this story somewhere? But they are true PHers, with a never say die attitude. Their attitude is, "I'm angry and by God, I'll get angry DESPITE hearing some good news."
Pistonheads - where even the good news is bad.

Pah - London is London. This is a UK survey. So what happens in the Outer Hebridies is just as valid as what happens in Peckham.Road deaths in London 112 http://content.tfl.gov.uk/casualties-in-greater-lo...

The majority of murderers don't tell the Police they have killed someone and it's just unfortunate bad luck or (stupidity on their part) if the body is found, with a professional premeditated murder if they then dump a body at sea or bury it deep enough then there's only a miniscule chance of being caught.

I would wager that there's a lot more people on Pistonheads in London than the outer Hebridesuntakenname said:

Given the number of missing persons posts on Facebook by my local police which are later updated to say the person has been found, I'd guess the vast majority of those 180,000 are found within a few days.
